KAMIAK WEEKLY UPDATE

April 18, 2025

FROM THE PRINCIPAL

If you haven’t already joined our Kamiak Parent Teacher Organization (PTO), now is a great time to do that. There are lots of fun ways to get involved, including attending monthly meetings. At the April meeting, one member shared a challenge I hear from parents often: I ask my child how school is going and I get one- or two-word answers.

Whenever a parent says that to me, I can relate. I am the parent of two teenagers – one in high school, and one graduate. There are plenty of times when my teenagers aren’t as interested in talking as I am interested in listening.

I have had the privilege of working with thousands of teenagers and their families over the course of my career. The benefit of that experience tells me that, when my children seem like they don’t need as much of my loving support, I should show that I care and that I am ready to listen when they are ready to talk.

If you need a good thing to ask about from this week, ask for their experience during our Thursday LipDub assembly.

Results from the Week

Spring Break
Over spring break, our athletes had a mix of wins and tough losses. Varsity Boys Baseball started strong with a 7-1 win over Arlington but later fell to them in a second matchup. JV Boys Baseball faced Arlington as well but came up short. In soccer, JV Boys dominated Arlington with a 9-0 shutout, and Varsity Boys Soccer pulled off a close 3-2 win. Varsity Baseball bounced back with a tight 3-2 victory over Mountlake Terrace. The JV Baseball team also had a strong showing, defeating Woodinville 6-4, while Varsity Baseball couldn’t hold off Woodinville in their game. Both JV and Varsity Boys Soccer teams faced Glacier Peak and unfortunately took losses.

Kamiak Girls Golf team placed 2nd in the Dolan Memorial Tournament held at Everett CC. Allie Suh secured 3rd place and won KP, Varsity Captain Sarah Dyer placed 2nd, Team Captain Ashley Kang followed close in the top 5, and Ashtyn McClure held it down in the top 10.

Monday, April 14
Girls Tennis Vs. Jackson - In yesterday's match, Kamiak played tough against Jackson. Suah and Annemarie quickly won at 2nd doubles while dominating every aspect of the match. At number 4 singles, Audrey won her third set, surprising her opponent who is used to winning. And at number 1 doubles, Megan and Fatiha won in a three set nail biter that lasted well into the evening with their skilled volleys to out play their opponents. Nice job, team!

Varsity Boys Baseball beat Glacier Peak 6-2 while JV lost.

Varsity Girls Softball won 7-6 against Jackson and JV Girls Softball lost against Sedri-Woolley.

Tuesday, April 15
Varsity Girls Tennis won 4-3 against Lake Stevens

Boys Soccer - Kamiak JV went down 1-0 early in the match yesterday against Mariner JV. The knights tied it up with a goal from Davin Herrera on an assist by Dylan Alexander in the 36th minute. Unfortunately the knights would fall 2-1 on a late own goal for Mariner. Kamiak Varsity got a goal by Yegor Tarasov in the 14th minute on an assist by Max George. Mariner would get one back shortly after on a cross and finish in the 19th minute. That’s how the half would end. Second half was almost all Knights in the attack getting their second goal of the game in the 48th minute where Cesar Torralba received a ball from Jax Kelley-Aranda and drove down the sideline, cut in and finished it low far post. The knights third goal on the night was a pass from Omar Elsir to Saikou Bojang where he dribbles through multiple Mariner defenders and slots it past the keeper. That’s all it took for the Knights to come away with a 3-1 victory in a huge rivalry league match. Your knights JV and Varsity will be back on the pitch Friday at lynnwood high school. Come root on your knights soccer teams!

Wednesday, April 16
Varsity Girls Softball won 6-0 with a great game against Cascade

Varsity Boys Baseball won 5-3 against Glacier Peak and JV lost
Thursday, April 17
KAMIAK GIRLS GOLF TAKES 1ST PLACE!! At Wesco 4A District Match #2, our Knights dominated the leaderboard: Varsity Captain Sarah and Allie tied for 2nd, Ashtyn followed up in 5th, and strong finishes from Team Captain Ashley and Alina tied for 8th helped lock in the team victory.

Boys and Girls Track - Noah Haller set a new school record with a shot put throw of 61 feet ¼ inch putting him second in state. Additionally, Miller Warme achieved record-breaking performances last night by dominating the 400-meter and 300-meter hurdles events.

PERFORMING ARTS

Something Rotten!

Welcome to the Renaissance and the outrageous, crowd-pleasing musical farce, Something Rotten. Set in the 1590s, brothers Nick and Nigel Bottom are desperate to write a hit play but are stuck in the shadow of that Renaissance rock star known as "The Bard." When a local soothsayer foretells that the future of theatre involves singing, dancing and acting at the same time, Nick and Nigel set out to write the world’s very first musical. But amidst the scandalous excitement of opening night, the Bottom Brothers realize that reaching the top means being true to thine own self, and all that jazz.

Something Rotten features large song and dance numbers, and a wacky cast of over-the-top characters, each with their own moment to shine. Throughout its Broadway run, the musical received a show-stopping standing ovation from audiences... in the beginning of the first act! It’s become clear that “nothing’s as amazing as a musical,” so don’t miss your chance to see this history-twisting tale.

COUNSELING CORNER

Graduation

We are officially less than two months away from graduation!! This is an exciting time, but it is also extremely important for students to focus, be proactive in problem-solving, and work with their team if they need support. It is not uncommon for seniors to lose motivation this time of year, knowing graduation is just around the corner. Please encourage your student to confirm they are on-track for graduation and have them reach out to their teachers or counselor to make a plan, if needed. If your student is currently not passing classes, attending credit recovery, working on independent study or online classes, or needs to submit additional paperwork to be on-track, they should be keeping in contact with their teachers and counselor consistently over the coming weeks. We are here to help! If your student cannot complete all requirements, they may not be eligible to graduate and/or participate in the ceremony. We hope to support every student in finishing the year strong!!

Running Start Fall Quarter Registration

Fall quarter registration has begun, and college fall course guides are now available!! If your student is planning to attend fall quarter at Running Start, please read through the information below that pertains to your individual student.

For currently enrolled Running Start students (11th grade) to register for classes, they will need to complete the quarterly verification form and meet with their Kamiak school counselor to have it signed. Students should review class options in the college course guide before contacting their counselor. The earlier this step can be completed, the better chance they have of getting the classes they want/need. A copy of the verification form is available on the Kamiak Running Start page (under Counseling) and hard copies are available in the Counseling Office.

Students enrolling for the first time should be in the process of completing the Running Start registration steps on the college website. All students need to have viewed our Kamiak Running Start Webinar prior to registration. The webinar link is available on the Career and College Readiness page of the Kamiak website (under Counseling). We HIGHLY recommend parents watch this webinar with their students. As students navigate steps, they can contact their school counselor for questions.

Is your student interested in summer quarter at Running Start? Your student may be eligible for summer college classes and should talk to their Kamiak counselor if they want to explore this option. This quarter is open to incoming new students, current students, and even graduating seniors who qualify. Summer quarter is shorter (less than 8 weeks long), faster paced than a typical quarter, and the amount of credits taken can impact or be impacted by the number of credits your student completes during the regular school year. If your student is interested in summer quarter, they should contact their counselor while completing fall quarter registration.
