KAMIAK WEEKLY UPDATE

May 8, 2026

FROM THE PRINCIPAL

As we wrap up Teacher Appreciation Week, I want to extend a heartfelt thank you to all of the students who took the time to reach out and express their gratitude to our incredible teachers. Whether through kind notes, thoughtful words, or simple gestures, your appreciation made a meaningful impact. Our teachers truly felt valued and recognized for the dedication and care they bring to Kamiak every day.

I would also like to give a special shout-out to our amazing PTO for treating our staff to donuts and coffee. Their generosity and ongoing support help make our school such a wonderful place to work and learn.

We are incredibly fortunate to be part of a community that consistently shows up to support one another. Thank you to our students, families, and PTO for helping make Teacher Appreciation Week so special. 💜

PERFORMING ARTS

Kamiak Spring Musical - Damn Yankees
Book by Douglass Wallop & George Abbott
Music and Lyrics by Jerry Ross & Richard Adler

Directed by Bryan Sullivan
Music Directed by Nancy Duck-Jefferson
Choreographed by Eva Stone
Orchestra Directed by Brian Steves

Based on the novel, The Year the Yankees Lost the Pennant by Douglass Wallop, Damn Yankees the Broadway mega-hit and winner of seven Tony Awards, including Best Musical, hits it out of the park! The winning score by Adler and Ross and a devilish book by George Abbot have made this sporty musical comedy a true American classic.

Middle-aged baseball fanatic Joe Boyd, trades his soul to the Devil, also known as Mr. Applegate, for a chance to lead his favorite team to victory in the pennant race against the New York Yankees. As young baseball sensation, Joe Hardy, he transforms the hapless Washington Senators into a winning team, only to realize the true worth of the life that he's left behind. Joe ultimately outsmarts Applegate, returns to his former self and shepherds the Senators to the World Series.

Light, fast-paced and devilishly clever, Damn Yankees is a homerun hit, featuring all-American subject matter and an irreverent sense of humor. The perfect choice for a high school's spring musical or community theatre production, Damn Yankees is a wicked, romantic comedy, sure to please.

Show Dates: May 8, 9 at 7pm
(additional 2pm performance on May 9)

  • $15.00 for Students & Seniors
  • $20.00 General Admission

Tickets go on sale April 13th, 2026.

For more information, please email Theatre Director Bryan Sullivan at sullivanbp@mukilteo.wednet.edu.

COUNSELING CORNER

SBA State Testing for Running Start Students

As a reminder, ALL current 11th grade students are required to take the Washington Comprehensive Assessment for Science (WCAS) during state testing this month. Those who did not pass the 10th grade Smarter Balanced state assessments for English and Math are also required to retake the test(s) they did not pass. Passing SBA state tests can open doors to high school credit and meeting students Graduation Pathway requirement. Students should attend and put their best effort towards passing. Your student will need to notify their college teachers if they need to be excused from a class for testing. Please look for communications regarding test dates and locations coming soon from our administrator, Mrs. Sasha Fraleigh.

Running Start Fall Quarter Registration

Fall quarter registration has begun, and college fall course guides are now available! If your student is planning to attend fall quarter at Running Start, please read through the information below that pertains to your individual student.

For currently enrolled Running Start students (11th graders) to register for classes, they will need to complete the quarterly verification form and meet with their Kamiak school counselor to have it signed. Students should review class options in the college course guide before contacting their counselor. The earlier this step can be completed, the better chance they have of getting the classes they want/need. A copy of the verification form is available on the Kamiak Running Start page (under Counseling) and hard copies are available in the Counseling Office.

Students enrolling for the first time should be in the process of completing the Running Start registration steps on the college website. All students need to have viewed our Kamiak Running Start Webinar prior to registration. The webinar link is available on the Running Start page of the Kamiak website (under Counseling). We HIGHLY recommend parents watch this webinar with their students. As students navigate steps, they can contact their school counselor for questions.

Is your student interested in summer quarter at Running Start? Your student may be eligible for summer college classes. This quarter is open to incoming new students, current students, and even graduating seniors who qualify. Summer quarter is shorter (less than 8 weeks long) and faster paced than a typical quarter, which often makes it more challenging. Additionally, the number of credits your student is eligible to take will be based on the number of credits they completed during the school year. If your student is interested in summer quarter, they should contact their counselor when they complete fall quarter registration.

Graduation

We are just 5 weeks away from graduation! This is an exciting time, but it is also extremely important for students to focus, be proactive in problem-solving, and work with their team if they need support. It is not uncommon for seniors to lose motivation this time of year, knowing graduation is just around the corner. Please encourage your student to confirm they are on track for graduation and have them reach out to their teachers or counselor to make a plan, if needed. If your student is currently not passing classes, attending credit recovery, working on independent study or online classes, or needs to submit additional paperwork to be on track, they should be keeping in contact with their teachers and counselor consistently over the coming weeks. We are here to help! If your student cannot complete all requirements, they may not be eligible to graduate and/or participate in the ceremony. We hope to support every student in finishing the year strong!!
