KAMIAK WEEKLY UPDATE

October 16, 2026

FROM THE PRINCIPAL

One of my favorite things about working at Kamiak is the spirit of inclusion that pervades our campus, especially with respect to inclusion of students with disabilities.

You may already know that Kamiak has a nationally-recognized program for inclusion in sports called Unified Athletics. Unified is a sports team where students with disabilities and students without disabilities compete together in bowling, basketball, and (new this year) soccer. This season, our Unified Bowling team is knocking down pins and picking up wins!

Inclusion in our extracurricular opportunities is an extension of what is happening in classrooms each day at Kamiak. We always aim to give students precisely the right mix of challenge and support. The culture of inclusion at Kamiak (among students, staff, and families) is a valuable support that helps us increase the challenge our students can experience. Our children would be surprised to hear from their parents and grandparents about how our students with disabilities experienced school in the past.

In Washington, October is Disability Awareness and History month – and, here at Kamiak we are part of writing the history of inclusion. That is one more thing that makes me proud of our school! If you spend time talking with your child about your childhood experiences with (or without) inclusion, you would invite them to know the history they are making too.

As I write this message, we haven’t yet celebrated some of our Homecoming festivities. But, it is the right moment to say THANK YOU to everyone who flooded our office with treats, drinks, and goodies the students can enjoy at their Homecoming dance on Saturday night. It’s going to be an even better time because of your generosity.

American Mathematics Competition ✖️➕➖➗🟰

The AMC will be held Thursday November 5 in the library from 2-4pm. Sign up and pay for your spot either in bookkeeping or through the Kamiak website until October 30. See a Math Team member or Mrs. Baldridge in E123 for more information. https://maa.org/amcreg/

Why take the AMC? You should take the AMC test to showcase mathematical talent for college admissions, qualify for prestigious follow-up competitions like the AIME, develop critical problem-solving skills, and deepen interest in STEM fields. High scores on the AMC can strengthen applications to selective universities, provide opportunities for scholarships, and serve as a valuable indicator of a student's potential, especially in STEM-focused programs.

Academic Coaching

Academic Coaches are available to help students in virtually all subject areas Monday through Thursday from 2:00PM-3:00PM in the Kamiak library. Students can drop by the Study Zone (no appointment necessary) for a quiet place to work on assignments with a coach nearby to help. Students who would benefit from individual help in a specific subject can request a 1-on-1 coach to work with them weekly (the request form is in the Kamiak Library Schoology course).

All coaches are hand selected for their academic successes at Kamiak, so you can rest assured that your student will get the help they need to thrive academically.

Contact our librarian, Mrs. Schwenn, with questions.

Lady Knights Wrestling

Find Your Team—Try Lady Knights Wrestling!

Kamiak students—looking for a place to belong, a new challenge, or a way to build strength and confidence? Come learn about Lady Knights Wrestling!

Wrestling gives you the chance to learn new skills, see your progress, and discover what you can accomplish with teammates supporting you. No experience is needed, and you don’t have to already be in great shape. Whether you’ve played other sports or have never joined a team, there’s a place to start.

You don’t have to know anyone on the team—come on your own or bring a friend!

Join Coach Baldwin for either preseason meeting:

- Thursday, October 22 — 2:15–3:10 p.m.
- Wednesday, November 4 — 2:15–3:10 p.m.

Location: Small wrestling room (yoga room)

Both meetings will cover the same information, so choose whichever date works best for you. You’re welcome to attend both!

We’ll cover:

- What wrestling is like: What beginners can expect, how we help you learn, and how teammates support one another.
- Finding your role: Knights and Squires participation options, choosing your commitment level, and team manager opportunities.
- The season ahead: Practice and competition schedules, attendance and communication expectations, and captain selection.
- Getting started: FinalForms registration, what to bring, and preparing for our first practice on November 16.

Returning wrestlers, first-time wrestlers, and potential team managers are all welcome. Attending a meeting does not commit you to joining. Bring your questions and find out whether Lady Knights Wrestling is right for you.

Families, please encourage your student to attend if they’re curious—even if they’ve never considered wrestling before.

Can’t make either meeting? Email Coach Baldwin at baldwinjh@mukilteo.wednet.edu for information.

COUNSELING CORNER

Graduation Updates

Most of our seniors attended their first Senior Meeting last week to discuss the senior timeline and deadlines, graduation activities, upcoming events, and planning resources for this year and after high school. Students and parents can visit the Senior Class Page on the Kamiak website (under Students and Families) to view any and all resources throughout the year.

Sno-Isle Skill Center Registration Opens Soon!

The Sno-Isle Tech Skill Center application opens on Monday, November 9th at 12:00pm for the 2027-2028 school year. 10th and 11th grade students are eligible to apply. Interested students should visit the Sno-Isle Tech website in advance to create an account (sc.mukilteoschools.org/). We highly recommend students submit their application as soon as registration opens since programs are first come, first served. If your student is considering applying, please have them reach out to their school counselor to confirm the program will fit into their graduation plan.

Additionally, Sno-Isle will have an Open House on Saturday, November 7th from 10am-1pm. We encourage families to attend to learn more about available opportunities.

11th Grade Lessons

This week, our Counseling team met with 11th grade students for classroom lessons to discuss their transcripts and academic planning, share resources for post-high school pathways, and begin their High School and Beyond Plan (HSBP) activities. The HSBP is a state-mandated graduation requirement for all students, beginning in middle school, that guides them in planning for post-high school education, training, and careers.

Whether your student is in the planning stages or has no idea where to start, we encourage them to meet with our Career and College Counselor, Ms. Jenelle Huber to learn more about opportunities for after high school. Students can also connect with our HSBP Specialist, Ms. Theresa Cline, for help completing their 11th grade tasks. Students can visit Ms. Cline and Ms. Huber in our College and Career Readiness Center (Counseling Office).

College Applications: Common App, Transcripts, and Letters of Recommendation

We know there are many seniors who are starting to complete college applications this fall. If your students is applying to schools through The Common Application, please have them meet with their counselor at least 3-weeks in advance of their first deadline to confirm we have everything we need to complete our part of their application.

If your student is applying to schools that require teacher or counselor letters of recommendation, we highly encourage them to meet with recommenders as far in advance of their deadlines as possible (minimum 2 weeks), during available office hours or appointment. Students should contact their recommenders early to confirm they are available to write a recommendation.

Lastly, counselors and teachers do not work evenings, weekends, or during holiday breaks. It is your student’s responsibility to make sure our staff have everything we need in advance so we can meet deadlines and support them in the process. If your student is unsure if they have taken all necessary steps, they can reach out to their school counselor or Mrs. Huber to confirm they are on track. We are here to help!
