KAMIAK WEEKLY UPDATE

October 23, 2026

FROM THE PRINCIPAL

This week, we held our second Intervention & Outreach Day for the 2026-27 school year. In the two such days this year, teachers have sent invitations to 1200 appointments and met with many hundreds of students who attended a support session without having been invited.

Thank you to all our families and friends who encourage students to take part in this valuable resource. We created Intervention & Outreach Days as a support for our students, especially those who needed a during-the-day opportunity to get help. This is one of the ways that all students and staff can connect with one another for a variety of reasons, such as retakes, pre-teaching, re-teaching, and study support.

In support of these days, I need some very specific help from our families:
  • When you get a message saying that your student is invited to an appointment, please encourage them to attend and get the most out of the opportunity
  • After Intervention & Outreach day, please ask how it went; the intervention is much more powerful when students recognize that getting help got them results
  • When you hear about struggle or challenge, tell your child to talk with their teacher; often these conversations have led to Intervention and Outreach appointments
  • Help us with messaging: When a teacher invites a student for support, they are not signaling that the student is ‘in trouble’ in any way. We want our young people to believe that getting help (when you need it) is an important part of being a successful adult.

STUDENT AND FAMILY INFORMATION

Congratulations Kamiak Students of the Month for October

The following students were selected by Kamiak staff as Students of the Month for September 2026 due to their outstanding academics, school and/or community leadership and activities and/or athletics.
A grid of school portraits displays eight students with their names and grade levels listed underneath.

Dress Code Reminder 👖👕👗👚

Friendly reminder for Spirit Days etc.: If you dress in a way that disrupts a teacher’s ability to teach, or a student's ability to learn you will be asked to change or go home. This day is not meant to make fun of how other students' dress and what you wear should not be selected based on another student’s race, national origin, ethnicity, sexual orientation, gender, religion, or disability. Making fun of others by dressing a certain way violates our harassment, intimidation, and bullying policy. This is not a day to wear a costume of someone. And remember if you feel like you have to ask if it's "ok" to wear, you probably shouldn't wear it.”

  • Costumes must comply with the dress code in the student handbook (page 18 & 19)
  • Costumes must not interfere school safety
  • Costumes must not obscure your face or a staff member’s ability to identify you
  • Students are not permitted to bring weapons or facsimiles
  • Costumes must not incorporate blood or gore

AP Students - AP Exam Ordering and Payment Now Open!

AP Exam Ordering
When to Order: Now - November 6th
How to Order: 2-Step Process
1) Ordering Online or at Bookkeeping Window (2nd Floor – Attendance Room)
2) CollegeBoard - Students need to indicate 'yes' in each subject they want to order an AP Exam on College Board
  • Price for Exam: $105 per exam
  • $50 late fee per exam applies when ordering after November 6th
  • No Refunds
  • Free/Reduced - All three steps need to be completed for exam fee waiver: Nutrition Benefit Application, Consent to Share Form and OSPI Low-Income Student Verification Form. (For students who have their AP test fees waived: They are still charged the $50 late fee if they register after Nov 6. They are also charged the $50 cancellation fee if they cancel their test or if their test goes unused.)

American Mathematics Competition ✖️➕➖➗🟰

The AMC will be held Thursday November 5 in the library from 2-4pm. Sign up and pay for your spot either in bookkeeping or through the Kamiak website until October 30. See a Math Team member or Mrs. Baldridge in E123 for more information. https://maa.org/amcreg/

Why take the AMC? You should take the AMC test to showcase mathematical talent for college admissions, qualify for prestigious follow-up competitions like the AIME, develop critical problem-solving skills, and deepen interest in STEM fields. High scores on the AMC can strengthen applications to selective universities, provide opportunities for scholarships, and serve as a valuable indicator of a student's potential, especially in STEM-focused programs.

Academic Coaching

Academic Coaches are available to help students in virtually all subject areas Monday through Thursday from 2:00PM-3:00PM in the Kamiak library. Students can drop by the Study Zone (no appointment necessary) for a quiet place to work on assignments with a coach nearby to help. Students who would benefit from individual help in a specific subject can request a 1-on-1 coach to work with them weekly (the request form is in the Kamiak Library Schoology course).

All coaches are hand selected for their academic successes at Kamiak, so you can rest assured that your student will get the help they need to thrive academically.

Contact our librarian, Mrs. Schwenn, with questions.

Kamiak Lady Knights Wrestling: Two Ways to Join. One Team

Trying something new takes courage—especially when you’ve never pictured yourself as a wrestler. But your first day could be the start of new friendships, new confidence, and discovering a strength you didn’t know you had.

You don’t need experience. You don’t need to be in shape before you start. You need a willingness to learn—we’ll help you build from there.

Lady Knights Wrestling offers two ways to participate:

Knights commit to the full practice and competition schedule, including additional Knight Time training.

Squires learn and train with the team at least three agreed practice days each week, attend every dual meet, and have the option to wrestle matches when ready. Both options include team-event responsibilities, which we’ll explain at the meeting.

Both are full, equally valued members of our team. Choose the commitment that fits your goals and circumstances.

You don’t have to know whether you’ll be good at wrestling to give yourself the chance to find out.

Come to our preseason meeting November 4, from 2:15–3:10 p.m., in the small wrestling room (Yoga Room). Meet the coaches, ask questions, and learn what your first season could look like. Bring a friend—attending doesn’t commit you to joining.

The season starts November 16. Your wrestling story could start here.

Can’t attend? Contact Coach Baldwin to learn more at baldwinjh@mukilteo.wednet.edu

📍 Location: Kamiak Weight Room

COUNSELING CORNER

10th Grade Lessons

Last week, our Counseling team met with 10th grade students for classroom lessons to discuss their transcripts and academic planning, share resources for post-high school pathways, and begin their High School and Beyond Plan (HSBP) activities. The HSBP is a state-mandated graduation requirement for all students, beginning in middle school, that guides them in planning for post-high school education, training, and careers.

Whether your student is in the planning stages or has no idea where to start, we encourage them to meet with our Career and College Counselor, Ms. Jenelle Huber to learn more about opportunities for after high school. Students can also connect with our HSBP Specialist, Ms. Theresa Cline, for help completing their 11th grade tasks. Students can visit Ms. Cline and Ms. Huber in our College and Career Readiness Center (Counseling Office).

Sno-Isle Skill Center Registration Opens Soon!

The Sno-Isle Tech Skill Center application opens on Monday, November 9th at 12:00pm for the 2027-2028 school year. 10th and 11th grade students are eligible to apply. Interested students should visit the Sno-Isle Tech website in advance to create an account (sc.mukilteoschools.org/). We highly recommend students submit their application as soon as registration opens since programs are first come, first served. If your student is considering applying, please have them reach out to their school counselor to confirm the program will fit into their graduation plan.

Additionally, Sno-Isle will have an Open House on Saturday, November 7th from 10am-1pm. We encourage families to attend to learn more about available opportunities.

Running Start: Winter Quarter Registration

If your student is currently enrolled in Running Start, they should be planning to meet with their counselor for winter quarter registration. To register for classes, your student will need to complete the quarterly verification form and have it signed off by their Kamiak School Counselor. The verification form is available on the college website and the Running Start page of the Kamiak website (under the CCRC section). All directions and required steps for this process were sent to student’s school outlook emails this month. Please have your student review all directions before meeting with their counselor.
