KAMIAK WEEKLY UPDATE
December 13, 2024
FROM THE PRINCIPAL
Principal Pic
I am a proud principal… and I am a proud father of two teenagers. This week, my son will come home after his first semester of college. Whether he’d chosen the military, the working world, or college, my son would have encountered challenge. He chose college and his classes have been tough – so tough, in fact, that he worries about losing his academic scholarship. Thankfully, my son started university with many college credits. His grades in those classes are keeping his GPA up and protecting that scholarship. This week, I invited Mr. Stelling (Career and College Readiness Counselor) and Mrs. Anderberg (Kamiak Communications) to share how you and your students can have a similar experience by participating in College in the High School here at Kamiak.

As we look toward creating the best opportunities for our students, programs like College in the High School (CHS) stand out as a way to help them prepare for their futures. CHS at Kamiak allows students to earn college credits while staying engaged in their high school experience, striking the perfect balance between rigorous academics and the connections that come with being part of Kamiak’s community.
Benefits of College in the High School
1. Stay Connected to Kamiak
CHS allows students to remain active in Kamiak’s community, participating in sports, clubs, and events without the challenges of balancing a separate college schedule, as required by programs like Running Start.

2. Convenience and Familiarity
With courses taught by Kamiak’s own teachers, CHS provides the structure and support students need to succeed in college-level academics while remaining in a familiar learning environment.

3. Free College Credits
CHS provides an incredible opportunity for students to earn college credits at no cost. Unlike traditional college tuition, which can be expensive, CHS courses are funded by the state and are completely free for all grade levels, making it an accessible and cost-effective way for families to save on higher education expenses.

4. Easier Credit Transfers
Many CHS credits are designed to fulfill general education requirements and transfer smoothly to colleges and universities, ensuring they align with students' long-term academic goals.

5. Balance and Flexibility
Since CHS courses are integrated into Kamiak’s schedule, students can more easily balance their academics, extracurricular activities, and personal commitments.

6. Preparation for Future Success
CHS courses challenge students with college-level material, helping them build confidence, critical thinking skills, and the study habits needed to thrive in higher education.

College in the High School at Kamiak empowers students to get a head start on college while staying fully immersed in their high school experience. It’s a smart, flexible, and cost-effective way to prepare for future academic success while enjoying everything Kamiak has to offer.
How to Register for College in the High School
CHS courses at Kamiak are mostly offered through Everett Community College with the exception of AP Computer Science courses and Spanish II taught by Mrs. Lewis. To register for CHS, talk with your high school teacher about registration instructions or go to Everett CC’s website and type College in the High School in their search bar. Follow the step by step instructions on how to enroll at Everett CC and register for CHS classes at Kamiak. If you need assistance, you can make an appointment with Mr. Stelling in the CCRC.

Cold and Flu Season 😷🤒🤧
As you know, it is cold and flu season. If you have a fever or frequent symptoms of coughing, runny nose, vomiting, or diarrhea you should stay home and have your parent/guardian email Attendance. If you become sick at school, you should come to the health room and your parent or guardian may be called to pick you up, and you should not attend evening activities, such as sports, music, or drama practices, club meetings or other activities. Generally if you are too sick for class, you are also too sick for evening activities.  Students are not allowed to carry any medicines in their backpacks, except for Epipens and inhalers. If you need to keep medicines in the health room, please see the Kamiak website, under “Students & Families,” and “Student Health,” for the forms to complete.
Prepare for weather impacts image
Inclement Weather Plans ❄🌨
SCHOOL CLOSURES AND DELAYS
With the sudden drop in temperatures, we thought it would be helpful to give a refresher on what to do in the event school is delayed or canceled due to inclement weather conditions or other events. Bus routes may also be affected by unsafe travel conditions.

The announcement of a school closure or delay is usually made early in the morning. All authorized parents and guardians will receive a ParentSquare message if school is closed or delayed. If you have a mobile phone number on file with your child's school, you should also receive a text message.

Updated school closure and delay information will also be posted on the school district’s website, on the FlashAlert website, and the district Facebook page and Instagram page. If school is canceled, the school day will be made up later in the year. If bus routes are limited due to snow or ice on roadways, the alternate routes are listed on the district transportation website. 🚌🚌🚌🚌

In addition to the mass communication system, there are other options for receiving a text message in the event of a school closure or delay. When the school district announces a change in the schedule, it notifies the local TV and radio stations through a service called FlashAlert. You can receive a text message directly from FlashAlert whenever the school district posts a notice to that system. You can receive that service by signing up for FlashAlert Messenger. Many local TV and radio stations also offer similar services. Most of the major radio and television stations broadcast information about school closures.
EARLY DISMISSAL
Conditions could develop during the school day that may require school to be dismissed earlier than planned. Information about early dismissals will be provided to local radio and television stations and distributed through the school district’s mass communication system. If school is dismissed early, and transportation home is not available, a child will be released only to his or her parent or guardian or to a person previously authorized by the parent or guardian. We ask that parents please bring photo identification (such as a driver’s license) to ensure student safety. School staff will remain at the school until all students have been released.

Check this page on our website to learn more about Emergency Information.

COUNSELING CORNER
Running Start Winter Quarter Registration
If your student is currently enrolled in Running Start, winter quarter registration is open. Students only have one weeks left to complete registration steps with their counselor before winter break. Classes are filling up fast! Since counselors do not work over the break, all verification forms should be completed prior to December 20th. Please encourage your student to reach out to us ASAP!

The verification form is available on the college website and the Running Start page of the Kamiak website (under the CCRC section). Directions for this process were sent to student’s school outlook emails in October.
Personalized Pathway Waiver (SENIORS!)
Does your 12th grade student still have Fine Arts and/or World Language credits needed for graduation? If yes, please read the message below. If your student is unsure, please have them reach out to their counselor to review a copy of their transcript.

Students can waive up to 1.0 Fine Arts credit and up to 2.0 World Language credits for graduation through their Personalized Pathway Requirement (PPR). The Personalized Pathway allows for certain credits in high school to be “flexible” credits to give students more choice in pursuing their interests, based around their post-high school goals.

If your student is planning to waive their remaining Fine Arts and/or World Language credits, they need to meet with their school counselor by December 18th to complete the PPR waiver form. Forms can be found in the Counseling Office. Students are not on track for graduation if they are still missing these credits.
College Applications: Common App, Transcripts, and Letters of Recommendation
If your student is applying to colleges and universities through Common App, there are sections of the application that their school counselor will need to complete. Please have your student make an appointment with their counselor before winter break. To prepare for this meeting, students should fill out a Personal Data Form. Hard copies can be found in the Counseling Office and digital copies are on the Kamiak website in the Letters of Recommendation section. To prepare for this meeting, students should also fill out a Personal Data Form. Hard copies of the form can be found in the Counseling Office. Students can also access a digital version on the Kamiak website (CCRC at Letters of Recommendation).

After students invite their counselor into Common App, they will need to log into their Parchment account and request for a transcript to be sent to Common App: First Year (see directions below). If your student is applying to colleges that are not on the Common App, they may need to submit their transcript directly to these schools. As a reminder, counselors do not have access to official transcripts.

To request a copy of an official transcript through Parchment, students should visit the Transcript Request page of the Kamiak website. Students will need to create a Parchment account (using their own personal email) to submit the request. Transcripts will be delivered electronically within 2-3 school days and can be sent to students themselves, family members, school staff, programs, colleges, etc. If your student needs an unofficial transcript, they can contact their counselor for a copy.
Lastly, counselors and teachers do not work evenings, weekends, or during holiday breaks. It is your student’s responsibility to make sure our staff have everything we need in advance so we can meet deadlines and support them in the process. We run into issues every year where students do not plan ahead and try to email us during the break to assist with their applications. If your student has an early January deadline, please let them know to come see counseling ASAP if they haven’t already.
Graduation Requirements for Seniors
SENIORS should be in the process of completing their 12th grade High School and Beyond Plan (HSBP). If your student has not finished their HSBP activities and needs assistance, they can contact our coordinator, Ms. Theresa Cline. Her office is in the Kamiak Counseling Office and students can make an appointment with her or drop by during lunchtimes. HSBP Deadline: December 17th

If your student is completing online classes for credits this year, we highly recommend they get started on these as soon as possible. Many of these courses can take several months to complete and every year we have students who push the work to the last minute. Your student will not be eligible to participate in graduation if they have not completed all required credits.

For students enrolled in our Plato Credit Recovery class, keep up the hard work! Many students have quite a few credits to make up and setting up a time to check-in with their Plato teacher before break can be a great opportunity to confirm their status and make a plan for the upcoming break.

For students who are enrolled in Washington State History, they should contact their teacher, Mr. Semeraro, if you have concerns about deadlines. We have quite a few seniors who are not passing the class at this time, and we hope that students can work hard to keep up and pass for the semester. This is a graduation-required class for those that still need the credit.
