KAMIAK WEEKLY UPDATE
January 10, 2025
FROM THE PRINCIPAL
Principal Pic
Happy New Year – may this be a year of learning and growth for all of us!

January is a curious month in schools… it feels like a beginning and an ending.

At the start of a new calendar year, it’s a time for reflection and goal setting. Young people and educators are often caught up in the excitement of new beginnings and visions for the year ahead. It’s a fantastic time for families and friends to talk about hopes, goals, and dreams. For our graduating seniors, 2025 is a number they have waited at least thirteen years to see – you have an exciting year ahead.

And, because we are so close to the end of first semester, January is also a time for finishing strong. Most classes at Kamiak (year-long and semester-length) use grading systems where the cumulative grade in January is what will show up on the report card. That makes this the right time to double- and triple-check Qmlativ and Schoology. If there are missing assignments, this is the right time to clean out the backpack and see if something is misplaced. If a teacher has offered a retake or make-up test, now is the right time to get that scheduled. Let’s wrap up first semester with grades that truly show what we know and can do.

Whether you are focused on the whole year or these next few weeks, know that I am glad to start 2025 here with you all.

COUNSELING CORNER
Semester Grades
As we enter the final three weeks of the semester, we encourage families to review grades together and discuss strategies to address areas of concern. This is a crucial time for students to engage and focus on doing what they can to pass classes and finish the semester strong. If there are classes they can’t pass, we recommend they work with their teacher or counselor to raise their grade as close to passing as possible (every point counts!). This can make it easier to makeup/recover the credit if needed.

For students who need assistance, our academic resources are readily available, including tutoring and teacher/counselor support (see below). We are here to partner with you to help your student end the semester on a positive note!

Teacher Office Hours – Teachers may offer time before or after school for students who need more individualized support. This can be a great time to work on assignments, get feedback, and ask questions along the way. Students should talk with their specific subject teacher to ask about availability.

Academic Coaches – A tutoring program where students can meet with an upper-level student tutor to get help with specific subjects each week in the library. Scheduling is flexible to fit your student’s schedule. Students tutor can be a great resource because they have experienced our classes and curriculum recently and have a good grasp of the material your student is learning. If your student is interested, they can talk with their teacher, counselor, or our librarian, Mrs. Schwenn.
KAP (Kamiak Afterschool Program) – An academic intervention program where students receive assistance with completing current or missing assignments, test-taking, and study skills. KAP is available from 2:10pm-3:00pm Monday-Thursday in Mrs. Hubbard’s classroom, Portable 1. Students are referred to KAP by their teacher, administrator, or counselor. Teachers can recommend work for students to complete if they need help with organization or prioritizing.

Study Zone – Opportunity for quiet, individual or group study time in the library from 2:00pm-3:30pm Monday-Thursday each week. Academic Coaches will be available to help students with homework. For questions, students can talk with our librarian, Mrs. Schwenn.
Personalized Pathway Waiver (SENIORS!)
We still have MANY students that did not meet the deadline to submit their Personalized Pathway form (explanation below). Students who still require Fine Arts and/or World language credits, but do not plan to take courses, are not on track for graduation at this time. Please talk with your student and review their academic record to ensure they complete remaining requirements for graduation.

Does your 12th grade student still have Fine Arts and/or World Language credits needed for graduation? If yes, please read the message below. If your student is unsure, please have them reach out to their counselor to review a copy of their transcript.

Students can waive up to 1.0 Fine Arts credit and up to 2.0 World Language credits for graduation through their Personalized Pathway Requirement (PPR). The Personalized Pathway allows for certain credits in high school to be “flexible” credits to give students choice in pursuing their interests and goals.

Forms can be found in the Counseling Office.
Graduation Requirements for Seniors
With only three weeks left in the semester, we hope you and your student are reviewing grades and making a plan to address classes of concern. Most of our seniors needs to pass all of their classes to graduate. For academic resources, please review the Semester Grades section above. For questions, please don’t hesitate to contact your students teacher or counselor.

If your student is completing online classes for credits this year, we highly recommend they get started on these as soon as possible. Many of these courses can take several months to complete and every year we have students who push the work to the last minute. Your student will not be eligible to participate in graduation if they have not completed all required credits.

For students enrolled in our Plato Credit Recovery class, keep up the hard work! Many students have quite a few credits to make up and setting up a time to check-in with their Plato teacher can be a great opportunity to confirm their status and make a plan.

Students enrolled in Washington State History, can contact their teacher, Mr. Semeraro, if they have concerns about deadlines for course. We have quite a few seniors who are not passing the class at this time, and we hope that students can work hard to catch up and pass for the semester. This is a graduation-required class for those that still need the credit.
