KAMIAK WEEKLY UPDATE

March 28, 2025

FROM THE PRINCIPAL

When we return from Spring Break, we will have only a handful of days left in the third quarter of the school year. That makes the next few weeks especially important. I want to challenge all of us to do three key activities:

  • First – Set a goal for having no missing work, unfinished test corrections/retakes, or incomplete assignments by Friday the 4th. Families can help with this goal by asking if there is any work students need to finish before starting their break.

  • Next – Write up a list of things you want to experience over Spring Break. If you can, reserve some time for rest and relaxation. Plan something that brings you joy and expression. Plan to connect with a friend you’ve been too busy to see. The last quarter of the school year is very demanding and we will need our energy to finish strong.
Mr Shurtleff
Last – We need to go into spring together – all of us! In a recent staff training, we talked about many things that make students successful. And, we talked about what can cause students to struggle most. At the very top of our list was REGULAR, DAILY ATTENDANCE. Your attendance is so crucial. Did you know that all it takes is two days of absence in a month for most students to fall significantly behind their peers? Please set a goal (and ask a friend to help make sure you keep your goal) for being fully present each and every day through the last day of school so all our Knights can achieve their very best.

STUDENT AND FAMILY INFORMATION

Student Drop Off and Pick Up Reminder 🚗🚫

Center Circle: This lot is intentionally closed to pick up and drop-off before and after school. By moving traffic through our two faster and safer options, we keep our students safe and our traffic flowing.

Fastest and Safest Option: Use the entrance from Harbour Pointe Boulevard near the Silver Lot on the south side of campus near the Performing Arts Center. Use both lanes for quicker pick-ups and drop-offs. If you need a moment longer, pull out of traffic into a parking lot so other drivers can keep moving. Exit out of the southeast corner of the Purple lot onto Chennault Beach Road. Drivers using this exit can turn either right or left.

Slower and Safe Option: Use the entrance from Harbour Pointe Boulevard near the White Lot on the north side of campus near the gym. Immediately after entering the lot, turn left and drive all the way into the parking area. Reminder: Cars are NOT allowed to drop off in the bus loop. Drivers in this lot must pull all the way into the lot and yield to buses.

ALL LOTS - Our staff who guide traffic flow and monitor crossings prioritize the safety of our students. Thank you for following all guidance you receive from these folks as they keep our students safe and traffic moving.

🎶 First Ever School Wide Lip Dub! 🎤

On April 17th Kamiak will film our first ever whole school lip dub. A lip dub is a music video where performers lip sing along to songs and the music is dubbed over their performance. Select students have been chosen as the main "singers" but all Kamiak students get to participate by lining the route and cheering when the camera comes past. If your student has opted out of having their image displayed publicly, there will be a classroom space for them to remain during the filming. Please reach out to Crystal Stengele for more details.

Early in the second half the Knights added a 43rd minute goal from a Dario Baez shot from distance that was assisted by Dylan Le. Shortly after, Dylan Alexander took a corner that was knocked down for an assist by Per Oye and finished by Dario Baez for the Knights 3rd goal in the 45th minute. The Knights finished the 4-0 win off with an Olympico, a goal straight in off a corner, by Dylan Alexander. Varsity created a steady of attack in the first half leading to many great chances but went into half time tied 0-0. Early in the second half Yoel Segura-Sandoval took a corner that was put into the side netting by Carter Kjolso. That was all the Knights would need while holding onto the shutout and beating Marysville Pilchuck 1-0.

Varsity Girls Softball vs Stanwood
JV Girls Softball vs Everett

Boys Soccer - The Kamiak Knights Boys Soccer C team traveled to Cascade for a game Monday evening. The Bruins went up 1-0 slotting one just inside the post late in the first half. The Knights would get a second off of a cross from Calixto Franzs headed home by Aiden Bocalan for the game winner in the 64th minute as your Kamiak Knights walked away with a 2-1 victory.
Tuesday, Mar 25
Varsity Boys Baseball defeated Cascade 3-0, while JV won big with an 18-3 victory.

Varsity Boys Soccer JV boys soccer faced off against Jackson JV Tuesday night at Kamiak High School. Kamiak got on the score sheet first with a goal off a Dylan Alexander corner in the 17th minute that Dario Baez headed home. The Knights scored again in the 36th minute on a penalty kicked earned and finished by Davin Herrera. The Knights third goal came in the 63rd minute to even the scoreline at 3 on a cross by Dylan Le that was side volleyed into the side netting by Tyler Lee. Unfortunately Jackson was able to get a 4th before the end of regular time and your Knights JV fell 4-3 to Jackson. Kamiak Varsity battled Jackson all the way through extra time to a nil-nil draw. Kamiak saw a bit more in the attack with each team creating a few good chances. Otto Richter came up huge on a first time shot inside the 6 yard box and a double save on a couple of back to back headers at the far post.

Varsity Girls Softball earned a 4-2 win over Arlington, while JV claimed a 15-7 victory.

Wednesday, Mar 26
Varsity Girls Tennis won 7-0 and JV won 6-1 against Mariner.

Thursday, Mar 27
C-team Boys soccer played Everett High School's C-team on Thursday at Harbor Pointe. Your Knights went up 1-0 early scoring on a first minute cross by Toan Nguyen that was beautifully placed far post by Kevin Trujilloreyes. The Knights would double their lead with a 24th minute goal on a long ball played from Nolan Zirkle to Jaiden Kim who was able to get behind the defense and slot one past the Everett keeper. In the 30th minute Aiden Bocalan pressured the Everett keeper taking the ball and putting it in the net for Kamiak's 3rd on the night. Their 4th goal came in the 33 minute when Cooper Knutzen took the ball 3/4 of the field on his own and poked one past the oncoming keeper. The Knights were not done there, they added a 5th first half goal in the 34 minute on another long ball from Nolan Zirkle and a miss hit clearance by Everett falling to Aiden Bocalan for his second on the night. The Knights would add 2 in the second half, both by Gael Ortega. His first was following up a shot by Kevin Trujilloreyes from a Cooper Knutzen free kick in the 59 minute. Gael's second was 5 minutes later in the 64th minute assisted by Calixto Fransz closing out the scoring on the night.

Kamiak dominated the Boys' Track events, securing a solid victory with 101 points against Cascade's 49. Meanwhile, in the Girls' Track, Kamiak also emerged victorious with a score of 96 to Cascade's 50. A special shout-out to Noah Haller, who's nearing a school record with an impressive 177.5 ft throw in the discus!

Varsity Boys Baseball lost against Lake Stevens.

PERFORMING ARTS

Something Rotten!

Welcome to the Renaissance and the outrageous, crowd-pleasing musical farce, Something Rotten. Set in the 1590s, brothers Nick and Nigel Bottom are desperate to write a hit play but are stuck in the shadow of that Renaissance rock star known as "The Bard." When a local soothsayer foretells that the future of theatre involves singing, dancing and acting at the same time, Nick and Nigel set out to write the world’s very first musical. But amidst the scandalous excitement of opening night, the Bottom Brothers realize that reaching the top means being true to thine own self, and all that jazz.

Something Rotten features large song and dance numbers, and a wacky cast of over-the-top characters, each with their own moment to shine. Throughout its Broadway run, the musical received a show-stopping standing ovation from audiences... in the beginning of the first act! It’s become clear that “nothing’s as amazing as a musical,” so don’t miss your chance to see this history-twisting tale.

COUNSELING CORNER

Academic Supports at Kamiak

As a reminder, Kamiak offers an activity bus after school Monday through Thursday at 4:00pm for students who stay for tutoring or academic support. Students should pick up a red activity bus pass from the staff member supervising them after school.

KAP (Kamiak Afterschool Program) – KAP is an academic intervention program that provides students with a structured, supportive environment to work on current, late, or missing assignments, complete assessments, and build study skills. It is led by a dedicated teacher and supported by student and staff tutors, providing students with a focused environment to efficiently complete their work. Sessions are held Monday through Thursday from 2:10 PM to 3:00 PM in a classroom setting. Students can bring in work, or your students’ teachers can work with our KAP teacher to give feedback on assignments to prioritize. Students can be referred to KAP by a teacher, counselor, or administrator.

Academic Coaches - The Academic Coach program provides students with the opportunity to receive peer tutoring from knowledgeable upper-level students in a wide range of subjects offered at Kamiak. Tutoring sessions are typically held in the Kamiak library after school. Led by our librarian, Ms. Schwenn, the program is designed to support students in enhancing their academic skills, reinforcing subject knowledge, and encouraging students to build confidence in themselves. Students can access the Academic Coach request form on Schoology in the Library section.

Study Zone – Our school library hosts a Study Zone that serves as an academic resource, offering students a quiet and focused space for studying, collaborating on group projects, conducting research, and accessing a wide range of learning materials. Our Study Zone is open to students Monday through Thursday from 2:00pm – 3:30pm. For those needing extra academic support, our Academic Coaches (see above) may be available for drop-in assistance. Students can also visit the Library for resources before school, starting at 6:45am.

Teacher Office Hours – Teachers may offer office hours before or after school to provide students with additional academic support. Office hours are a great opportunity to ask questions and get individualized assistance with assignments and projects. Each teacher’s availability varies, and students and parents should reach out to the specific subject teacher to inquire about scheduling and availability.

Running Start Seniors – Graduation

As we get closer to graduation, we want to make sure parents are reminded that our Kamiak counselors do not have access to college grades or class progress reports during each quarter. Your student is the only person who can review grades and address concerns if they arise. Since counselors do not receive final grades until 1-2 weeks after the quarter ends, we have limited time during senior year to make an alternative plan if your student does not pass one or more classes. Knowing this, we want to encourage you and your student to review current grades together now and through spring quarter to confirm they are on track to pass. Students are expected to notify their Kamiak counselor as soon as possible if they learn they will not earn credit.

For seniors who are planning to take graduation-required classes during spring quarter, please note the information below:

  • Students who choose to complete required classes during spring quarter will need to be passing their courses in order to walk at the graduation ceremony. Your senior will be expected to login to their college account to share current class grade(s) with their school counselor during the week of graduation to confirm they have a passing grade. We are required to review grades for every student to ensure on-track status.

  • Because grades for spring quarter college classes are not finalized until late-June/early-July, and our staff are out for the summer, your senior will be eligible to pick up their diploma certificate in August when our registrar and counselors return from summer break. Kamiak students typically pick up their diplomas the week after graduation, but we cannot release the diploma until we can confirm they have passed all requirements at the college. During the graduation ceremony, they will still receive a diploma book, similar to every other student.

Running Start 2025-2026

Running Start information was presented to students and families through our Running Start webinar on Tuesday, February 11th. If your student was not able to attend, there is a recording available on the Running Start page of the Kamiak website (under Career and College Readiness Center). We HIGHLY encourage parents to watch this webinar with their students, and students should plan to view this prior to meeting with their school counselor.

This month, we will host Running Start information sessions for students who want to get started on planning. Our next sessions will be held during both lunches on Wednesday, April 2nd and after school on Tuesday, April 1st in the Counseling Office. Students will be reminded through our morning announcements, and more dates will be scheduled soon.

Resource Corner

This week, we want to feature a wonderful book resource: The Anxious Generation by Jonathan Haidt. Are you concerned about the impact of technology and social media on your child’s mental health? In The Anxious Generation, social psychologist Jonathan Haidt delves into the rise in anxiety and mental health challenges among young people. He examines how the shift to screen-based childhoods and a decline in independent play have reshaped development, making kids more vulnerable to stress and less prepared for adulthood. Haidt offers research-backed insights and practical solutions to help parents, educators, and communities support healthier, more resilient children.
