KAMIAK WEEKLY UPDATE

December 19, 2025

FROM THE PRINCIPAL

As we head into Winter Break, I want to extend my sincere thanks to our amazing students, dedicated staff, and supportive families. It is because of each of you that Kamiak continues to be a community rooted in learning, growth, and care for one another.

This season offers a chance to pause, reflect on all we have accomplished, and recharge for what lies ahead. Whether your break includes travel, time with family and friends, or simply slowing down at home, I hope it brings you moments of joy, peace, and warmth.

For many, winter break is often the first chance to go play in the snow. I hope that our snow-loving Knights will be safe and mindful as they enjoy the break…so we don’t have too many of you on crutches when we return in January.

Many of us have family and friends coming in from out of town. If you are looking for something fun to do over break, here are some fun Kamiak ideas:
  • Friday, December 19 – Follow the Girls and Boys Basketball teams to Arlington for a night of basketball (Away, starting at 6:30PM)
  • Monday, December 22 – Girls Basketball vs. Everett HS (Home, starting at 7:15PM)
  • Tuesday, December 30 – Dinner at Sound Pizza (PTO Fundraiser, Lincoln Avenue location) followed by Boys Basketball vs. Stanwood HS (Home, starting at 7:15PM)
  • Friday, January 2 – Girls and Boys Basketball Showcase vs. Mariner HS (Home, starting at 6:30PM)

As we look toward the new year, let’s carry forward the spirit of connection and gratitude that makes our school so special. I look forward to welcoming everyone back in January, ready for new challenges, opportunities, and successes.

Happy Holidays. Enjoy every moment of Winter Break, and here’s to an exciting and successful new year ahead!

STUDENT AND FAMILY INFORMATION

Congratulations to Our December Kamiak Students of the Month!

The following students were selected by Kamiak staff as Students of the Month for December 2025 due to their outstanding academics, school and/or community leadership and activities and/or athletics.
A grid of student portraits with names and grade levels: Tessa Tinsley (9th), Declan McNulty (10th), Lacey Huang (10th), Ephratah Tolla (11th), Ethan Hood (11th), Jaron Harkness (12th), and Thomas Ashton (12th).

World Language Proficiency Exam - Earn credit for fluency!

If you are fluent reading, writing, and speaking another language you could earn up to 4.0 high school credits by taking the World Language Proficiency Exam. If you are interested, please have your student see Ms. Spies in the Counseling office during lunch drop-ins. The deadline to register is Friday, January 16th

The Mukilteo School District provides students in grades 8-12 with an opportunity to earn up to 4.0 high school credits by taking a World Language proficiency exam (WLPE). Students are tested on their reading, writing, and speaking skills in the language selected and must be able to do all three to earn credit. Students earn a “pass” grade and not a letter grade for any credits awarded and therefore does not affect their grade point average. These credits do not count towards the 2.0 external credits (see curriculum guide) that students are allowed to apply to their transcript, and they do count toward the World Language graduation requirement.

For a list of the languages currently being offered to test in, Visit Here.

Inclement Weather Plans ❄️🌧️

SCHOOL CLOSURES AND DELAYS
With the sudden drop in temperatures, we thought it would be helpful to give a refresher on what to do in the event school is delayed or canceled due to inclement weather conditions or other events. Bus routes may also be affected by unsafe travel conditions.

The announcement of a school closure or delay is usually made early in the morning. All authorized parents and guardians will receive a ParentSquare message if school is closed or delayed. If you have a mobile phone number on file with your child's school, you should also receive a text message.

Updated school closure and delay information will also be posted on the school district’s website, on the FlashAlert website, and the district Facebook page and Instagram page. If school is canceled, the school day will be made up later in the year. If bus routes are limited due to snow or ice on roadways, the alternate routes are listed on the district transportation website. 🚌🚌🚌🚌

In addition to the mass communication system, there are other options for receiving a text message in the event of a school closure or delay. When the school district announces a change in the schedule, it notifies the local TV and radio stations through a service called FlashAlert. You can receive a text message directly from FlashAlert whenever the school district posts a notice to that system. You can receive that service by signing up for FlashAlert Messenger. Many local TV and radio stations also offer similar services. Most of the major radio and television stations broadcast information about school closures.

EARLY DISMISSAL
Conditions could develop during the school day that may require school to be dismissed earlier than planned. Information about early dismissals will be provided to local radio and television stations and distributed through the school district’s mass communication system. If school is dismissed early, and transportation home is not available, a child will be released only to his or her parent or guardian or to a person previously authorized by the parent or guardian. We ask that parents please bring photo identification (such as a driver’s license) to ensure student safety. School staff will remain at the school until all students have been released.

Check this page on our website to learn more about Emergency Information.

College Applications: Common App, Transcripts, and Letters of Recommendation

If your student is applying to colleges and universities through Common App, there are sections of the application that their school counselor will need to complete. Please have your student make an appointment with their counselor before winter break. To prepare for this meeting, students should fill out a Personal Data Form. Hard copies can be found in the Counseling Office and digital copies are on the Kamiak website in the Letters of Recommendation section. To prepare for this meeting, students should also fill out a Personal Data Form. Hard copies of the form can be found in the Counseling Office. Students can also access a digital version on the Kamiak website (CCRC at Letters of Recommendation).

After students invite their counselor into Common App, they will need to log into their Parchment account and request for a transcript to be sent to Common App: First Year (see directions below). If your student is applying to colleges that are not on the Common App, they may need to submit their transcript directly to these schools. As a reminder, counselors do not have access to official transcripts.

To request a copy of an official transcript through Parchment, students should visit the Transcript Request page of the Kamiak website. Students will need to create a Parchment account (using their own personal email) to submit the request. Transcripts will be delivered electronically within 2-3 school days and can be sent to students themselves, family members, school staff, programs, colleges, etc. If your student needs an unofficial transcript, they can contact their counselor for a copy.

Lastly, counselors and teachers do not work evenings, weekends, or during holiday breaks. It is your student’s responsibility to make sure our staff have everything we need in advance so we can meet deadlines and support them in the process.
