KAMIAK WEEKLY UPDATE

February 13, 2026

FROM THE PRINCIPAL

School Resource Officer Appreciation
On February 15th, we recognize nationwide School Resource Officer appreciation day. At Kamiak, we are fortunate to have Mukilteo Police Department Officer AJ Dodds working with our students, staff, and families.

Officer Dodds is a mentor to our students who can be depended upon for clear guidance and steadfast support. She helps our young people learn about the laws that govern our community – spending significant time in classes each year helping students make sense of the rules our community needs them to know. And, she serves in her capacity as a law enforcement officer keeping our school safe.

The Mukilteo School District and Mukilteo Police Department are partnered to provide our students and community with Officer Dodds’ support. I have countless examples of the great help she is to Kamiak and I am grateful to her for all she does for all of us.
In honor of this important appreciation day, I ask all of us to make a point of demonstrating our thanks with a kind word or note when we get that opportunity next.

Earning College Credit In High School
As we return to the time of year when students and families are thinking about registering for next year’s classes, we want to give you information about Dual Credit options at Kamiak. Dual Credit classes earn high school and college credit at the same time – reducing college costs, boosting post-secondary enrollment, and strengthening the Kamiak school community.

At Kamiak, we want every student to have the chance to earn college credit while still in high school. Some of the opportunities for students earn credit that helps students work toward earning a college degree. And, some of our opportunities help students experience high-quality CTE courses that lead toward earning industry certification. We are aiming our students toward the future waiting for them after high school.

The three programs for Dual Credit:
  • College in the High School (CHS) – These university-approved courses are taught on Kamiak’s campus by Kamiak teachers. In Washington, CHS credits are guaranteed to transfer to public 2 and 4-year institutions. And, because these are free to all students, these classes are a fiscally responsible way for students to earn free college credit while staying part of the Kamiak on-campus experience.

  • CTE Dual Credit – All of our CTE classes at Kamiak are designed for students to gain hands-on, career-focused learning while also earning community college credit. These credits are granted directly by the college and can count toward the “home” college’s residency requirement for an Associate of Arts degree. They often lead directly to earning an industry standard certification – while remaining on the Kamiak campus among peers and within the high school experience.

  • Running Start – This coursework takes place at one of our area community colleges and gives students access to advanced coursework and different learning environments. With Washington’s 1.4 “super FTE” and summer eligibility, students can design schedules that keep them connected to the school while earning meaningful college credit. Students earn Running Start credit off-campus as college students in the college experience.

For students planning to attend college after high school, each of the three programs significantly reduces the cost of their future college plans. And each can help students make progress toward the Direct Transfer Agreement (for those planning to attend Washington colleges/universities) or earn the Associate of Arts degree (for those planning to complete that degree at a community college).

We encourage students to work with their parents and school counselors to choose the options that best align to their post-high school plans and the way they want to enjoy the high school experience. If you have questions and want to know more, please reach out to your counselor for support.

College Applications: Mid-Year Report (Senior Families Only)

If you have a senior applying to 4-year colleges or universities, they may soon receive a reminder about the Mid-Year Report/Mid-Year Transcript application requirement. This report, which includes a copy of their 1st semester grades, allows admissions offices to review how a student is performing academically during their senior year. It can help confirm that students are maintaining strong grades, continuing to challenge themselves, and/or making progress in current courses. It can also influence admission decisions, waitlist outcomes, and scholarship consideration, depending on the school.

Not all schools will ask for a Mid-Year Report. Please have your student check each college’s application portal to confirm whether one is required. If so, they will need to contact their school counselor to review next steps. Transcripts will be updated and available when we return from mid-winter break.
An important note…colleges request Mid-Year Reports early in the year because some high schools end their semesters in January. These institutions recognize that high schools across states will finalize first-semester transcripts at different times. Please know that any deadline prior to early-March, is not a hard deadline, and schools will accept transcripts at the time they are available from the individual high school. If students are concerned about deadlines from the college, they can reach out to the college’s admissions office directly.
