KAMIAK WEEKLY UPDATE

February 27, 2026

FROM THE PRINCIPAL

This week, I want to draw attention to the success of our ninth-grade students. Looking at first semester results, our ninth-grade students’ “on track” rate is significantly higher than the state average – nearly 20% higher! Our students’ “on track” rate is 89.8% for first semester. Our students’ success puts them head and shoulders above schools in our area and across the state. I am so proud of our students’ achievement.

I am proud of our classroom educators who are working to help our students with the crucial first year. We know the importance of ninth grade success cannot be overstated. Students who do well in 9th grade are significantly more likely to succeed throughout high school. I am grateful to the educators who have made this their primary focus.

I am also proud of the parents, families, and friends who have encouraged our ninth-grade students to start high school so strong. We can feel your support and I can say it is making a difference.

To our ninth-grade students: keep it up! You are off to a great start!

STUDENT AND FAMILY INFORMATION

Congratulations to our February Kamiak Students of the Month!

The following students were selected by Kamiak staff as Students of the Month for February 2026 due to their outstanding academics, school and/or community leadership and activities and/or athletics.
A grid displays eight student portrait photos with names and grade levels below.

Zoie Bullock - CTE Student of the Week

CTE Course: Chef 2 – Culinary Arts
Nominating Teacher: Mrs. Rourke
What do you like about the course? I liked learning new techniques for cooking and baking and I want to become a better cook in the future to start making meals at my house and when I go off to college so I can cook for myself in my dorm.
Plans after high school? My plan after high school is to go to a 4-year university still undecided, I might go 2 years at community and then transfer. I would like to become a nurse either an RN or OBGYN.
Interesting Fact: I play soccer, volleyball, and I am a girl scout. I love to color and spend time with my family.

Zoie was a hard worker in my Chef 1- Cooking for Wellness class and continues to bring the same accountability, attention to detail, and responsibility to Chef 2 – Culinary Arts. I’m impressed with Zoie’s preparedness. If she is absent, she returns to class with the material she missed completed as to not miss out on her learning.

COUNSELING CORNER

2026-2027 Kamiak High School Registration

Registration for next year has begun! 9th-11th grade students were presented with registration information and materials just before mid-winter break. Running Start 11th graders were emailed the information to their school outlook. We encourage students and families to look over the information together and make thoughtful choices about next year classes. The classes your student chooses are a commitment they are making for the full-year school year. Students will have an opportunity between April 22nd and May 8th to make changes to their course requests. We will remind students and families about this opportunity closer to then.

For registration presentations, videos, and our course guide, please visit the Course Requests page of the Kamiak website here: https://ka.mukilteoschools.org/38557_3

For our current 8th graders, Kamiak counselors will be visiting middle schools to present registration information on Thursday, March 12th. We will be sharing more information with 8th grade families at that time.

Running Start Spring Quarter Registration

Spring quarter registration for current Running Start students has begun! To register for classes, students will need to complete the quarterly Running Start Verification form and meet with their Kamiak school counselor to have it signed. A copy of the verification form is available on the Kamiak Running Start page (under Counseling) and hard copies are available in the Counseling Office. Students were all sent directions for spring quarter registration to their school outlook email. They should refer to this message before contacting their counselor.

On an ongoing basis, the college sends email reminders for registration, requirements, etc. We ask that students please review all college email communication they receive. Students are also required to continually check their school email (outlook) throughout the school year. Our team sends reminders not only about Running Start, but also updated Kamiak schedules, graduation reminders, grade-level activities, etc. Students are responsible for knowing this information.

Running Start 2025-2026

Running Start information was presented to students and families through our Running Start Webinar on Wednesday, February 11th. If your student was not able to attend, there is a recording available on the Running Start page of the Kamiak website (Under Counseling --> Career and College Readiness). We HIGHLY encourage parents to watch this webinar with their students, and students should plan to view the webinar prior to meeting with their school counselor.

For Kamiak registration, students who are interested in joining Running Start for the first time should plan to complete the registration form as if they will be attending Kamiak full-time next year (even if they plan to do full-time Running Start). Directions were sent to students through their school outlook emails. Current 11th grade Running Start students will also need to complete a registration form and should follow the directions emailed to them.

Senior Graduation Requirements

If your student is completing online classes for credits this year, we highly recommend they get started as soon as possible and work diligently. Many of these courses can take several months to complete and every year we have students who push the work to the last minute. Your student will not be eligible to participate in graduation if they have not completed all required credits.

For students enrolled in our Plato Credit Recovery class, keep up the hard work! Many students have quite a few credits to make up and setting up a time to check-in with their Plato teacher can be a great opportunity to confirm their status and make a plan.

Students enrolled in Washington State History for semester two, should contact their teacher, Mr. Semeraro, to access their independent study class materials and plan to complete the course. This is a graduation-required class for those that still need the credit.
