KAMIAK WEEKLY UPDATE

March 6, 2026

FROM THE PRINCIPAL

Last month, I visited with residents at a local assisted living center. I had such a nice time listening to their many connections to Kamiak. Many of these residents have children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren who have attended our school. Nearly everyone I met had something nice to say about one specific program: our music program.

March is Music In Our Schools Month. For more than thirty years, Kamiak High School has cultivated a robust and award-winning music program. Indeed our musicians are a source of pride to Kamiak, Mukilteo School District, and the community around us. Nearly one in three students at Kamiak is currently enrolled in a performing arts class. Some are taking their first arts class this year, while others will take a performance class all four years in high school. Many of our students will carry their passion for the performing arts into adulthood in the years after high school. We are fortunate to have such a strong program available for our students – I am proud of our students, teachers, countless support volunteers, and community for your success in the arts.

I wonder if you would make a point of attending an upcoming performing arts event. Nearly all our performing arts events are free to attend. There is always something to enjoy.

Thinking on those residents I visited at the assisted living center, I wonder if you would be willing to invite a neighbor or friend (possibly someone whose children graduated many years ago) to join you.

Here are some great opportunities to see our students perform and celebrate their growth as artists:
March 12 – Spring Choir Concert – 7PM Performing Arts Center
March 19 – Spring Band Concert – 7PM Performing Arts Center

Katie Dean - CTE Student of the Week

A young woman with light brown hair smiles broadly in front of a blue background.
CTE Course: AP Computer Science A (Java)
Nominating Teacher: Mr Binz
What do you like about the course?I love the ability to create a program from seemingly nothing and better understand how coding works, especially as the world becomes more computer science-y.
Plans after high school? I hope to become a nurse practitioner through UW.
Interesting Fact: I love to play the violin.

Katie is a consistent student and classroom leader. She completes her work with an exceptional level of mastery. She is always engaged and actively contributes to class discussions in a meaningful way. Her dedication, curiosity and positive presence make her a true asset to our classroom community. -  Mr. Binz

COUNSELING CORNER

2026-2027 Kamiak High School Registration

Registration for next year has begun! 9th-11th grade students were presented with registration information and materials just before mid-winter break. Running Start 11th graders were emailed the information to their school outlook. We encourage students and families to look over the information together and make thoughtful choices about next year classes. The classes your student chooses are a commitment they are making for the full-year school year. Students will have an opportunity between April 22nd and May 8th to make changes to their course requests. We will remind students and families about this opportunity closer to then.

For registration presentations, videos, and our course guide, please visit the Course Requests page of the Kamiak website here: https://ka.mukilteoschools.org/38557_3

For our current 8th graders, Kamiak counselors will be visiting middle schools to present registration information on Thursday, March 12th. We will be sharing more information with 8th grade families at that time.

Running Start Spring Quarter Registration

Spring quarter registration for current Running Start students has begun! To register for classes, students will need to complete the quarterly Running Start Verification form and meet with their Kamiak school counselor to have it signed. A copy of the verification form is available on the Kamiak Running Start page (under Counseling) and hard copies are available in the Counseling Office. Students were all sent directions for spring quarter registration to their school outlook email. They should refer to this message before contacting their counselor.

On an ongoing basis, the college sends email reminders for registration, requirements, etc. We ask that students please review all college email communication they receive. Students are also required to continually check their school email (outlook) throughout the school year. Our team sends reminders not only about Running Start, but also updated Kamiak schedules, graduation reminders, grade-level activities, etc. Students are responsible for knowing this information.

Senior Graduation Requirements

If your student is completing online classes for credits this year, we highly recommend they get started as soon as possible and work diligently. Many of these courses can take several months to complete and every year we have students who push the work to the last minute. Your student will not be eligible to participate in graduation if they have not completed all required credits.

For students enrolled in our Plato Credit Recovery class, keep up the hard work! Many students have quite a few credits to make up and setting up a time to check-in with their Plato teacher can be a great opportunity to confirm their status and make a plan.

Students enrolled in Washington State History for semester two, should contact their teacher, Mr. Semeraro, to access their independent study class materials and plan to complete the course. This is a graduation-required class for those that still need the credit.
