KAMIAK WEEKLY UPDATE

March 13, 2026

FROM THE PRINCIPAL

Knight Families,
Today, I had the pleasure of being Kamiak’s principal for our second annual Senior Takeover Day.

I was very pleased with the collaboration of my other administrators throughout the day. I also was very impressed by seniors who showed up today with a plan for their classes. I want to give a special shoutout to Elisa Cui and Jack Thompson for their efforts as Ms. Bowker. These two showed up with a Canva to effectively teach their class. Overall, I believe this was a successful Senior Takeover Day.

This week is also Educational Support Professional’s Week. As the daughter of a teacher, I know how much the support staff do to make teaching and learning happen. I am very grateful for all our staff who show up each day and continue to further our education. They are the backbone of our school staff and their work does not go unnoticed. On behalf of the student body, we appreciate you and thank you for your continuous hard work.

Kamiak Varsity battled hard and scored first in the second half when a corner from Yoel Segura was cleared out to Cooper Forman who put it back into the area and Dylan Alexander finished it. Shorecrest would get one late and the Knights tied 1-1 in their first game of the season.

COUNSELING CORNER

2026-2027 Kamiak High School Registration

9th-11th grade students submitted their course choices last week for our March 5th deadline. If your student has NOT submitted their registration form, we will need it as soon as possible. Students should bring late forms to the Counseling Office.

As a reminder, students were presented with registration information and materials just before mid-winter break. Running Start 11th graders were emailed the information to their school outlook email. The classes your student chooses are a commitment they are making for the full-year next year. Students will have an opportunity in late April to make changes to their course requests. We will send out these dates in early April. For registration presentations, videos, and our course guide, please visit the Course Requests page of the Kamiak website (under Counseling).

Academic Supports at Kamiak

As a reminder, Kamiak offers an activity bus after school, Monday through Thursday at 4:00pm, for students who stay for tutoring or academic support. Students should pick up a red activity bus pass from the staff member supervising them after school.

KAP (Kamiak Afterschool Program) – KAP is an academic intervention program that provides students with a structured, supportive environment to work on current, late, or missing assignments, complete assessments, and build study skills. It is led by a dedicated teacher and supported by student and staff tutors (when available), providing students with a focused environment to efficiently complete their work. Sessions are held Monday through Thursday from 2:10 PM to 3:00 PM in a classroom setting. Students can bring in work, or your students’ teachers can work with our KAP teacher to give feedback on assignments to prioritize. Students can be referred to KAP by a teacher, counselor, or administrator.

Academic Coaches - The Academic Coach program provides students with the opportunity to receive peer tutoring from knowledgeable upper-level students in a wide range of subjects offered at Kamiak. Tutoring sessions are typically held in the Kamiak library after school. Led by our librarian, Ms. Schwenn, the program is designed to support students in enhancing their academic skills, reinforcing subject knowledge, and encouraging students to build confidence in themselves. Students can access the Academic Coach request form on Schoology in the Library section.

Teacher Office Hours – Teachers may offer office hours before or after school to provide students with additional academic support. Office hours are a great opportunity to ask questions and get individualized assistance with assignments and projects. Each teacher’s availability varies, and students and parents should reach out to the specific subject teacher to inquire about scheduling and availability.

Our library is also open before, school, during lunches, and after school for students who just need a quiet study space and/or access to resources.

Running Start Spring Quarter Registration

Spring quarter registration for current Running Start students has begun! To register for classes, students will need to complete the quarterly Running Start Verification form and meet with their Kamiak school counselor to have it signed. A copy of the verification form is available on the Kamiak Running Start page (under Counseling) and hard copies are available in the Counseling Office. Students were all sent directions for spring quarter registration to their school outlook email. They should refer to this message before contacting their counselor.
