KAMIAK WEEKLY UPDATE

March 20, 2026

FROM THE PRINCIPAL

This week, we invited the families of our incoming 9th grade class to come for a visit. These students are the Kamiak Class of 2030!
Nearly all of you remember coming for that same March parent/family event where we introduced you to our teacher-leaders, clubs and their advisors, and some of the electives students can choose. Do you remember how richly overwhelming high school can seem?

It doesn’t usually take long for students and families to get a degree of familiarity and comfort with Kamiak – which is a good thing. Nevertheless, I invite all of us to think back to goals and dreams we had for high school before starting. For our current 9th to 11th grade students, I have some challenges for you:

  • Register for at least one class that sounds so hard you know it will take hard work and focus to be successful.

  • Pick a new club/sport you want to join. If you are already involved in clubs/sports, tell your family which one(s) you want to someday lead.

  • Colleges, jobs, special awards – these often require a letter of recommendation from a staff member. Tell your family which staff member knows you well, someone you’d ask for a letter of recommendation.

Lastly, if you know a family with a ninth grade student who will come to Kamiak next year, reach out and tell them something you love about our school. You never know what you will inspire by sharing your story.

Fifty one members of the Kamiak Drama Club joined thousands of theatre students at the Seattle Convention Center showcasing their performances, competing, attending workshops, backstage tours, and more. Parish Martin and Calvin Stephen’s performance was honored as the only duo scene showcased at state, on the 5th Avenue Theatre stage, and received a standing ovation. Kamiak students also received a superior for the student written play “Left Hand Man” written and directed by Parish Martin and Mikayla Caro. Kamiak is one of the few schools that bring student generated performances to state. COUNSELING CORNER

Kamiak Academic Supports

KAP (Kamiak Afterschool Program) – KAP is an academic intervention program that provides students with a structured, supportive environment to work on current, late, or missing assignments, complete assessments, and build study skills. It is led by a dedicated teacher and supported by student and staff tutors (when available), providing students with a focused environment to efficiently complete their work. Sessions are held Monday through Thursday from 2:10 PM to 3:00 PM in a classroom setting. Students can bring in work, or your students’ teachers can work with our KAP teacher to give feedback on assignments to prioritize. Students can be referred to KAP by a teacher, counselor, or administrator.

Academic Coaches - The Academic Coach program provides students with the opportunity to receive peer tutoring from knowledgeable upper-level students in a wide range of subjects offered at Kamiak. Tutoring sessions are typically held in the Kamiak library after school. Led by our librarian, Ms. Schwenn, the program is designed to support students in enhancing their academic skills, reinforcing subject knowledge, and encouraging students to build confidence in themselves. Students can access the Academic Coach request form on Schoology in the Library section.

Teacher Office Hours – Teachers may offer office hours before or after school to provide students with additional academic support. Office hours are a great opportunity to ask questions and get individualized assistance with assignments and projects. Each teacher’s availability varies, and students and parents should reach out to the specific subject teacher to inquire about scheduling and availability.

Our library is also open before, school, during lunches, and after school for students who just need a quiet study space and/or access to resources.

As a reminder, Kamiak offers an activity bus after school, Monday through Thursday at 4:00pm, for students who stay for tutoring or academic support. Students should pick up a red activity bus pass from the staff member supervising them after school.

Running Start Seniors – Graduation

As we get closer to graduation, we want to remind parents that our Kamiak counselors do not have access to college grades, attendance, or class progress reports during each quarter. Your student is the only person who can review grades and address concerns if they arise. Since counselors do not receive final grades until 1-2 weeks after the quarter ends, we have limited time during senior year to make an alternative plan if your student does not pass one or more classes.

Knowing this, we want to encourage you and your student to review current grades together now and through spring quarter to confirm they are on track to pass. Students are expected to notify their Kamiak counselor as soon as possible if they learn they will not earn credit.

For seniors who are planning to take graduation-required classes during spring quarter, please note the information below:

  • The college spring quarter typically runs later than our Kamiak graduation. Students may be expected to attend college classes and finish final assignments/assessments in the weeks following our graduation ceremony.

  • Students will need to be passing their required courses in order to walk at the graduation ceremony. During the week of graduation, your senior will be expected to log in to their college account to share current class grade(s) and confirm they are passing. We are required to review grades for every student to ensure on-track status.

  • Grades for spring quarter college classes are not finalized until after our staff have left for the summer. As a result, your senior will be eligible to pick up their diploma in August, when our registrar and counselors return. While Kamiak students typically receive their diplomas the week after graduation, we are unable to release diplomas in this case until we can confirm that all credit requirements have been successfully completed. During the graduation ceremony, your student will still receive a diploma book, just like all other graduates. Receiving the diploma in August will not negatively impact your students transition to their next opportunity.

Resource Spotlight

This week, we want to feature a wonderful mental health resource called Teen Link. This Crisis Connections-based program is a peer-to-peer support line for youth under the age of 21. Their teen volunteers (ages 15-20) are trained to listen to students concerns and talk with them about whatever is on their mind, whether it be related stress relationships, depression, school problems, anxiety, bullying, or any other issues they are facing. No issue is too big or small! Calls and chats are confidential unless volunteers believe there is a risk of harm or safety to the caller or someone else. Teens may call the line between 6pm and 10pm, or chat/text from 6pm-9:30pm. Teen Link also offers free interpreter services by phone. Please check out their website for more information. https://www.teenlink.org/
