KAMIAK WEEKLY UPDATE

May 1, 2026

FROM THE PRINCIPAL

I have profound respect and appreciation for the work Kamiak educators do with our students. If everyone could see what I see in and out of classrooms, you would know why I am so proud and grateful.

Education is more than a job, I believe. It’s a calling – a true vocation. It is a professional career that will take all you are willing to give and still demand more. Time and again, I see our Kamiak educators rising to the demands of our students’ academic, social/emotional, and personal needs. Our students are excellent at saying thank you (nice job, parents!) and now it is our turn to join that chorus.

If you don’t already have plans to honor our teachers next week, I hope you will consider participating in this fun way to celebrate Teacher Appreciation Week (May 4 to 8) created by Administrative Assistant Roundtree and Assistant Principal Pavilonis.

Greetings returning and future Kamiak Knights!
The WIAA Spring/Summer activity season is starting on June 1st and will run through July 31st. During the Spring/Summer season our Kamiak coaching staff can once again work directly with our returning and incoming student-athletes on sports specific camps/practices/contests/conditioning. Our coaches manage Athletic clearance over the Spring/Summer season, and so parents will need to fill out the below Google Parent Permission form in order for your athlete to be able to participate in Booster and School sponsored Spring/Summer activities.

The following programs and coaches/advisors will be offering Spring/Summer activities. Feel free to reach out to our coaches and advisors directly for more information on what they have planned to help our student-athletes prepare for next school year’s sports seasons.

Kamiak Choir and Orchestra Place at State

A group of young women in matching purple dresses stand together outdoors.
Kamiak High School Musicians Earn Top Honors at State Competition. Kamiak High School is proud to celebrate the outstanding achievements of its student musicians at the recent Washington State Solo & Ensemble Contest. Through dedication, artistry, and countless hours of preparation, Kamiak students once again demonstrated excellence on the state stage.

In addition, the Kamiak Orchestra Uber Kammerstreich placed 3rd in the State in the Large Strings Ensemble division, showcasing exceptional precision, musicianship, and ensemble unity.

Kamiak Spring Musical - Damn Yankees

Kamiak Spring Musical - Damn Yankees
Book by Douglass Wallop & George Abbott
Music and Lyrics by Jerry Ross & Richard Adler

Directed by Bryan Sullivan
Music Directed by Nancy Duck-Jefferson
Choreographed by Eva Stone
Orchestra Directed by Brian Steves

Based on the novel, The Year the Yankees Lost the Pennant by Douglass Wallop, Damn Yankees the Broadway mega-hit and winner of seven Tony Awards, including Best Musical, hits it out of the park! The winning score by Adler and Ross and a devilish book by George Abbot have made this sporty musical comedy a true American classic.

Middle-aged baseball fanatic Joe Boyd, trades his soul to the Devil, also known as Mr. Applegate, for a chance to lead his favorite team to victory in the pennant race against the New York Yankees. As young baseball sensation, Joe Hardy, he transforms the hapless Washington Senators into a winning team, only to realize the true worth of the life that he's left behind. Joe ultimately outsmarts Applegate, returns to his former self and shepherds the Senators to the World Series.

Light, fast-paced and devilishly clever, Damn Yankees is a homerun hit, featuring all-American subject matter and an irreverent sense of humor. The perfect choice for a high school's spring musical or community theatre production, Damn Yankees is a wicked, romantic comedy, sure to please.

Show Dates: May 1, 2, 8, 9 at 7pm
(additional 2pm performance on May 9)

  • $15.00 for Students & Seniors
  • $20.00 General Admission

Tickets go on sale April 13th, 2026.

For more information, please email Theatre Director Bryan Sullivan at sullivanbp@mukilteo.wednet.edu.

COUNSELING CORNER

Kamiak Registration – Schedule Change Opportunity

As of this week, all current 8th-11th grade students have the opportunity to change their Kamiak course requests for next year. Friday, May 8th will be the LAST DAY that students can change their course choices. After this date, all classes are locked in for the full 2026-2027 school year. Please keep in mind that some classes are already full for next year and your students school counselor can answer questions about availability.

Current Kamiak students will need to make an appointment with their school counselor or drop by the Counseling Office during their lunch time to request changes. All changes will need to come directly from the student in order to be processed. We cannot accept message or email requests for changes.

Current 8th grade students will need to send a Schoology message or email to their next year Kamiak counselor to request course changes. Students should include their name and student ID number. All changes will need to come directly from the student (not the parent/guardian) in order to be processed. A notification will be sent to the middle schools to let students know the change window is open.

We try to give every student their first choice of classes. But, due to the complexities of scheduling, students are sometimes assigned into their alternates or the closest similar class. Due to availability, some class requests have been altered. We HIGHLY encourage students and families to double check their requests and alternates during this last opportunity to make changes. Please talk with your student about the schedule they chose for next year to ensure they feel confident and happy with their decisions.

Running Start Fall Quarter Registration

Fall quarter registration has begun, and college fall course guides are now available! If your student is planning to attend fall quarter at Running Start, please read through the information below that pertains to your individual student.

For currently enrolled Running Start students (11th graders) to register for classes, they will need to complete the quarterly verification form and meet with their Kamiak school counselor to have it signed. Students should review class options in the college course guide before contacting their counselor. The earlier this step can be completed, the better chance they have of getting the classes they want/need. A copy of the verification form is available on the Kamiak Running Start page (under Counseling) and hard copies are available in the Counseling Office.

Students enrolling for the first time should be in the process of completing the Running Start registration steps on the college website. All students need to have viewed our Kamiak Running Start Webinar prior to registration. The webinar link is available on the Running Start page of the Kamiak website (under Counseling). We HIGHLY recommend parents watch this webinar with their students. As students navigate steps, they can contact their school counselor for questions.

Is your student interested in summer quarter at Running Start? Your student may be eligible for summer college classes. This quarter is open to incoming new students, current students, and even graduating seniors who qualify. Summer quarter is shorter (less than 8 weeks long) and faster paced than a typical quarter, which often makes it more challenging. Additionally, the number of credits your student is eligible to take will be based on the number of credits they completed during the school year. If your student is interested in summer quarter, they should contact their counselor when they complete fall quarter registration.

Graduation

We are just 6 weeks away from graduation! This is an exciting time, but it is also extremely important for students to focus, be proactive in problem-solving, and work with their team if they need support. It is not uncommon for seniors to lose motivation this time of year, knowing graduation is just around the corner. Please encourage your student to confirm they are on track for graduation and have them reach out to their teachers or counselor to make a plan, if needed. If your student is currently not passing classes, attending credit recovery, working on independent study or online classes, or needs to submit additional paperwork to be on track, they should be keeping in contact with their teachers and counselor consistently over the coming weeks. We are here to help! If your student cannot complete all requirements, they may not be eligible to graduate and/or participate in the ceremony. We hope to support every student in finishing the year strong!!
