KAMIAK WEEKLY UPDATE

May 15, 2026

FROM THE PRINCIPAL

Over the past two weeks, our Advanced Placement (AP) students have taken nearly 1000 tests. At Kamiak, we have dozens of AP classes in a variety of subjects – all of which offer students opportunities to gain college credit (and/or bypass required courses) by the scores they earn on the tests.

I am so proud of our students and the hard work they have devoted to preparing for their AP exams. If you get a chance to talk with a student who took an AP test, you might offer a kind word of encouragement.

I am also proud of our teachers for their hard work preparing students to enter AP tests with confidence. In the Pacific Northwest, our schools start later than in other parts of the country but the AP tests are on the same day around the world. That means our teachers have the added challenge of accelerating the content without compromising what students need to be ready to do well on the AP tests. If you know an AP teacher, you might take a moment to offer thanks and encouragement to them as well.

(Pictured: Ms. Bakketun greeting her AP Biology students with treats, goodies, and kind words before they walk in to the AP Biology exam prepared to show what they know!)

Curious to know more about AP classes?
Our AP classes are popular option for our students at our school. Not only do AP classes do an excellent job preparing students for the rigorous challenge they can expect at the college level, they can help make college less expensive for themselves and their families. At Kamiak, nearly all our AP classes also earn College in the High School credit. When I was young, you had to give up on the high school experience and attend Running Start if you wanted to earn college credit while in high school. Our AP and College in the High School classes give students a pathway to reducing the cost of college gathering college-level experience while remaining with their peers in the high school environment.

COUNSELING CORNER

Summer School

The Mukilteo School District Summer School will be held from July 6th through July 30th this year at Voyager Middle School. Initial invites were sent through Parent Square message last week for students who met the minimum grade percentage to qualify in available subjects. For questions about Summer School or credit recovery for your student, you can reach out to their school counselor to make a plan.

SBA State Testing for Running Start Students

As a reminder, ALL current 11th grade students are required to take the Washington Comprehensive Assessment for Science (WCAS) during state testing this month. Those who did not pass the 10th grade Smarter Balanced state assessments for English and Math are also required to retake the test(s) they did not pass. Passing SBA state tests can open doors to high school credit and meeting students Graduation Pathway requirement. Students should attend and put their best effort towards passing. Your student will need to notify their college teachers if they need to be excused from a class for testing. Please look for communications regarding test dates and locations coming soon from our administrator, Mrs. Sasha Fraleigh.

Running Start Fall Quarter Registration

Currently enrolled students who plan to continue with Running Start next year should be meeting with their school counselor as soon as possible to complete their fall quarter verification form. Registration will formally open later this month and students will need to have their form submitted in advance. Copies of the verification form is available on the Kamiak Running Start page and hard copies are available in the Counseling Office.

Is your student joining Running Start for the first time? New students will need to ensure they have viewed our Running Start Webinar recording, completed a Kamiak Running Start Contract, and apply to the Running Start program they want to attend. Students should meet with their school counselor as soon as possible if they are planning to apply.

Is your student interested in the Running Start Summer Quarter? Your student may be eligible for summer college classes. This quarter is open to incoming new students, current students, and even graduating seniors who qualify. Summer quarter is shorter (less than 8 weeks long) and faster paced than a typical quarter, which often makes it more challenging. Additionally, the number of credits your student is eligible to take will be based on the number of credits they completed during the school year. If your student is interested in summer quarter, they should contact their school counselor.

Graduation

We are just 4 weeks away from graduation! This is an exciting time, but it is also extremely important for students to focus, be proactive in problem-solving, and work with their team if they need support. It is not uncommon for seniors to lose motivation this time of year, knowing graduation is just around the corner. Please encourage your student to confirm they are on track for graduation and have them reach out to their teachers or counselor to make a plan, if needed. If your student is currently not passing classes, attending credit recovery, working on independent study or online classes, or needs to submit additional paperwork to be on track, they should be keeping in contact with their teachers and counselor consistently over the coming weeks. We are here to help! If your student cannot complete all requirements, they may not be eligible to graduate and/or participate in the ceremony. We hope to support every student in finishing the year strong!!
