KAMIAK WEEKLY UPDATE

March 21, 2025

FROM THE PRINCIPAL

PAC Update

Once a month, I have the opportunity to receive updates from our Performing Arts Center (PAC) remodel project approved by voters in 2020. You have probably seen the fencing and construction equipment by the PAC all year.

The most updated projections say the remodel will be complete in late June. But, there have been may exciting upgrades and improvements happening all along. Here is a sneak peek:
  • The seating is replaced and complete
  • The house lighting upgrades are complete – there is a new color change option that makes the space more efficient and flexible
  • The stage lighting upgrades are underway – we are updating to more modern stage and performance lighting so our students can shine
  • The stage floor demolition began last week – you might see a wrecking ball
  • A new sink and eyewash station has been installed and is working – this is an important safety feature for our students who work in Theatre Arts
  • The new fire curtain has been installed – this safety feature is something we are always thankful to have…and hope to never need to use
  • The stage shells are on the way – these large shells sit behind our music groups helping make sure sound is projected out to the audience so you hear a perfect blend of voices and instruments
  • There is a new sound/tech station in the PAC that will help our technicians with sound and light management, and it has a new vinyl wrap that matches the lobby which was installed recently
  • There is a new colorway changing LED system installed in the lobby that replaces the red, green, and orange neon lighting system – now the lights in the lobby can be part of the show

Most of that is invisible while the doors are locked and the community isn’t yet allowed to enter. The one visible change you might have noticed is updated signage on the outside of the PAC that helps guests and visitors find the building.

If you are curious and want to learn more, follow this link to construction updates.

Boys Soccer - On Friday night, Kamiak boys JV soccer battled hard to earn a 0-0 draw against a tough Shorewood side. Monday, Mar 17
Varsity and JV Boys Baseball teams secured victories against Everett, with Varsity winning 4-1 and JV dominating 11-1.

Varsity Girls Softball won 13-12 against Monroe

Boys Soccer - The C team defeated Snohomish HS 4-0 last night. Your Knights were led by Jaiden Kim with a brace, getting a goal in each half. Kevin Trujilloreyes scored the first goal for Kamiak in the 5th minute and Connor Florendo scored Kamiak’s 4th goal with the last kick of the game.

Tuesday, Mar 18
Boys Soccer - Kamiak boys JV tied Mariner JV 3-3 with goals from Ahmed Ibrahim, Dario Baez, and a goal with the last kick of the game by Daniil Denysiuk. The 80th minute goal pulled your knights even earning them the much deserved draw. Your varsity Knights fought very hard and created many excellent chances but couldn’t put one past the Mariner goal keeper on the night. Mariner’s lone goal was on a penalty in the second half. The Knights fell 1-0 to a much improved Mariner Varsity side Tuesday night.

COUNSELING CORNER

Academic Supports at Kamiak

As a reminder, Kamiak offers an activity bus after school Monday through Thursday at 4:00pm for students who stay for tutoring or academic support. Students should pick up a red activity bus pass from the staff member supervising them after school.

KAP (Kamiak Afterschool Program) – KAP is an academic intervention program that provides students with a structured, supportive environment to work on current, late, or missing assignments, complete assessments, and build study skills. It is led by a dedicated teacher and supported by student and staff tutors, providing students with a focused environment to efficiently complete their work. Sessions are held Monday through Thursday from 2:10 PM to 3:00 PM in a classroom setting. Students can bring in work, or your students’ teachers can work with our KAP teacher to give feedback on assignments to prioritize. Students can be referred to KAP by a teacher, counselor, or administrator.

Academic Coaches - The Academic Coach program provides students with the opportunity to receive peer tutoring from knowledgeable upper-level students in a wide range of subjects offered at Kamiak. Tutoring sessions are typically held in the Kamiak library after school. Led by our librarian, Ms. Schwenn, the program is designed to support students in enhancing their academic skills, reinforcing subject knowledge, and encouraging students to build confidence in themselves. Students can access the Academic Coach request form on Schoology in the Library section.

Study Zone – Our school library hosts a Study Zone that serves as an academic resource, offering students a quiet and focused space for studying, collaborating on group projects, conducting research, and accessing a wide range of learning materials. Our Study Zone is open to students Monday through Thursday from 2:00pm – 3:30pm. For those needing extra academic support, our Academic Coaches (see above) may be available for drop-in assistance. Students can also visit the Library for resources before school, starting at 6:45am.

Teacher Office Hours – Teachers may offer office hours before or after school to provide students with additional academic support. Office hours are a great opportunity to ask questions and get individualized assistance with assignments and projects. Each teacher’s availability varies, and students and parents should reach out to the specific subject teacher to inquire about scheduling and availability.

Running Start Seniors – Graduation

As we get closer to graduation, we want to make sure parents are reminded that our Kamiak counselors do not have access to college grades or class progress reports during each quarter. Your student is the only person who can review grades and address concerns if they arise. Since counselors do not receive final grades until 1-2 weeks after the quarter ends, we have limited time during senior year to make an alternative plan if your student does not pass one or more classes. Knowing this, we want to encourage you and your student to review current grades together now and through spring quarter to confirm they are on track to pass. Students are expected to notify their Kamiak counselor as soon as possible if they learn they will not earn credit.

For seniors who are planning to take graduation-required classes during spring quarter, please note the information below:

  • Students who choose to complete required classes during spring quarter will need to be passing their courses in order to walk at the graduation ceremony. Your senior will be expected to login to their college account to share current class grade(s) with their school counselor during the week of graduation to confirm they have a passing grade. We are required to review grades for every student to ensure on-track status.

  • Because grades for spring quarter college classes are not finalized until late-June/early-July, and our staff are out for the summer, your senior will be eligible to pick up their diploma certificate in August when our registrar and counselors return from summer break. Kamiak students typically pick up their diplomas the week after graduation, but we cannot release the diploma until we can confirm they have passed all requirements at the college. During the graduation ceremony, they will still receive a diploma book, similar to every other student.

Running Start 2025-2026

Running Start information was presented to students and families through our Running Start webinar on Tuesday, February 11th. If your student was not able to attend, there is a recording available on the Running Start page of the Kamiak website (under Career and College Readiness Center). We HIGHLY encourage parents to watch this webinar with their students, and students should plan to view this prior to meeting with their school counselor.

This month, we will host Running Start information sessions for students who want to get started on planning. Our next sessions will be held during both lunches on Tuesday the 25th and after school on Thursday the 27th. Students will be reminded through our morning announcements and more dates will be scheduled soon.

2025-2026 Kamiak High School Registration

As a reminder, students were presented with registration information and materials just before mid-winter break and returned their course request forms for our deadline on March 5th. Running Start 11th graders were emailed the information to their school outlook. The classes your student chooses are a commitment they are making for the full-year next year. Students will have an opportunity between April 28th and May 9th to make changes to their course requests. We will remind students and families about this opportunity as it draws near.

For current 9th-11th grade registration presentations, videos, and our course guide, please visit the Course Requests page of the Kamiak website.

Resource Corner

This week, we want to feature a wonderful mental health resource called Teen Link. This Crisis Connections-based program is a peer-to-peer support line for youth under the age of 21. Their teen volunteers (ages 15-20) are trained to listen to students concerns and talk with them about whatever is on their mind, whether it be related stress relationships, depression, school problems, anxiety, bullying, or any other issues they are facing. No issue is too big or small! Calls and chats are confidential unless volunteers believe there is a risk of harm or safety to the caller or someone else. Teens may call the line between 6pm and 10pm, or chat/text from 6pm-9:30pm. Teen Link also offers free interpreter services by phone. Please check out their website for more information.
