KAMIAK WEEKLY UPDATE

April 25, 2025

FROM THE PRINCIPAL

Every so often, I hear students complain about how they go to school, work hard, but don’t get paid. In our culture, it’s hard to convince someone that they will indeed get paid for their hard work in high school…but they might not see their payoff for many years to come.

A few years ago, the federal government published research about the value of earning a high school diploma. In short, person with a high school diploma is predicted to earn between $9,000 and $10,000 more per year than someone who doesn’t have a diploma. If that person works for 40 years, that means they earn between $360,000 and $400,000 more in their lifetimes.

Life after high school is mysterious to teenagers. Take some time and share how different levels of education – formal, technical, military, on-the-job training – open up higher levels of pay and responsibility at your job. And, share what having a diploma means for people who do your kind of work. You might be surprised to see your child learning something new that inspires them!

Results from the Week

Friday, April 18
Boys Soccer - On Friday your Knights took on Lynnwood High School. JV took an early lead on an assist by Dylan Alexander to Dario Baez who hit one from distance in the 4th minute. The lead would be doubled in the 8th minute on a ball played from Dario to Temy Yemane. The knights third goal was an assist from Matthew Bai to Dani Denysiuk with a shot from distance in the 28th minute. The knights got one more before half in the 37th minute off a corner from Dylan Alexander to Davin Herrera. In the second half the knights netted two more in the 58th minute Dani to Davin and in the 64th Davin to Ashton Bullock. The final was a 6-0 victory for your knights. Varsity also came out on top 2-0 with a 5th minute goal off a free kick from distance by Yoel Segura that was headed clear to Cesar Torralba who put it off the post and in. The knights second would come from a pass from Yoel to Max George who slotted it far post to give the knights a 2-0 win. Tonight all 3 teams for boys soccer take the field.

Monday, April 21
Boys Soccer - Kamiak JV Boys battle hard at Jackson to a nil nil draw. Both teams created chances with your knights having more of the ball and the better opportunities but they couldn’t find the back of the net on the night. Varsity fell 3-0 to Jackson but we would say that scoreline doesn’t reflect the play on the field. The first half was controlled by Kamiak but a very questionable non call on an handling lead to Jackson’s first goal and an mistake in the second half lead to a turnover and Jackson’s second goal. Kamiak was chasing the game and a counter attack where a Kamiak defender was tripped up letting Jackson free on goal for their third. Kamiak C-team was also in action coming away with a home victory over Lake Stevens 2-0.

Tuesday, April 22
Varsity Girls Softball lost to Arlington but JV won 13-12.

JV Boys Baseball won 8-4 against Mariner.
Wednesday, April 23
JV Girls Tennis defeated Edmonds-Woodway with a strong 6-1 finish. Varsity Girls Tennis also came out on top, edging out a 4-3 win.

C-team Boys Soccer - Your Kamiak Boys Soccer C-team took on Cascade in a league match on Wednesday. Your knights got on the scoresheet first when Toan Nguyen cut back a ball to Ezra Wundrow in the 4th minute. In the 15th minute Kamiak doubled the lead in another cut back from Toan to Calixto Fransz. In the 19th minute Nolan Zirkle headed home a corner kick from Calixto. Your knights were not done there, adding a 4th in the 37th minute on a ball from Conner Florendo to Gael Ortega where he dribbled through the Cascade defense for the score. Cascade got on the scoresheet on a penalty in the 55th minute and would later miss a penalty to end the game. The knights added one more in the 69th minute on a cut back cross from Torin Stevenson to Gael. Your Knights C-team remain top of the table with the 5-1 victory over Cascade.

Thursday, April 24
Varsity Girls Tennis won 6-1 against Cascade

Varsity Boys Baseball won 17-1 and JV won 12-0 against Marysville-Pilchuck

PERFORMING ARTS

Something Rotten!

Welcome to the Renaissance and the outrageous, crowd-pleasing musical farce, Something Rotten. Set in the 1590s, brothers Nick and Nigel Bottom are desperate to write a hit play but are stuck in the shadow of that Renaissance rock star known as "The Bard." When a local soothsayer foretells that the future of theatre involves singing, dancing and acting at the same time, Nick and Nigel set out to write the world’s very first musical. But amidst the scandalous excitement of opening night, the Bottom Brothers realize that reaching the top means being true to thine own self, and all that jazz.

Something Rotten features large song and dance numbers, and a wacky cast of over-the-top characters, each with their own moment to shine. Throughout its Broadway run, the musical received a show-stopping standing ovation from audiences... in the beginning of the first act! It’s become clear that “nothing’s as amazing as a musical,” so don’t miss your chance to see this history-twisting tale.

COUNSELING CORNER

Graduation

We are officially less than two months away from graduation!! This is an exciting time, but it is also extremely important for students to focus, be proactive in problem-solving, and work with their team if they need support. It is not uncommon for seniors to lose motivation this time of year, knowing graduation is just around the corner. If your student cannot complete all requirements, they may not be eligible to graduate and/or participate in the ceremony.

Please encourage your student to confirm they are on-track for graduation and have them reach out to their teachers or counselor to make a plan, if needed. If your student is currently not passing classes, attending credit recovery, working on independent study or online classes, or needs to submit additional paperwork to be on-track, they should be keeping in contact with their teachers and counselor consistently over the coming weeks. We are here to help and hope to support every student in finishing the year strong!!

Kamiak Registration – Schedule Change Opportunity

Between Monday, April 28th and Friday, May 9th, all current 8th-11th grade students will have the opportunity to change their Kamiak course requests for next year. Friday, May 9th will be the LAST DAY that students can change their course choices. After this date, all classes are locked in for the full 2025-2026 school year. Please talk with your student about the schedule they chose for next year to ensure they feel confident and happy with their decisions. Please keep in

Current Kamiak students will need to make an appointment with their school counselor or drop by the Counseling Office during their lunch time to request changes. All changes will need to come directly from the student (not the parent/guardian) in order to be processed. We cannot accept message or email requests for changes.

Current 8th grade students will need to send a Schoology message or email to their next year Kamiak counselor to request course changes. All changes will need to come directly from the student (not the parent/guardian) in order to be processed. A notification will be sent to the middle schools to let students know the change window is open.

Running Start Fall Quarter Registration

Fall quarter registration has begun, and college fall course guides are now available!! If your student is planning to attend fall quarter at Running Start, please read through the information below that pertains to your individual student.

For currently enrolled Running Start students (11th grade) to register for classes, they will need to complete the quarterly verification form and meet with their Kamiak school counselor to have it signed. Students should review class options in the college course guide before contacting their counselor. The earlier this step can be completed, the better chance they have of getting the classes they want/need. A copy of the verification form is available on the Kamiak Running Start page (under Counseling) and hard copies are available in the Counseling Office.

Students enrolling for the first time should be in the process of completing the Running Start registration steps on the college website. All students need to have viewed our Kamiak Running Start Webinar prior to registration. The webinar link is available on the Career and College Readiness page of the Kamiak website (under Counseling). We HIGHLY recommend parents watch this webinar with their students. As students navigate steps, they can contact their school counselor for questions.

Is your student interested in summer quarter at Running Start? Your student may be eligible for summer college classes and should talk to their Kamiak counselor if they want to explore this option. This quarter is open to incoming new students, current students, and even graduating seniors who qualify. Summer quarter is shorter (less than 8 weeks long), faster paced than a typical quarter, and the amount of credits taken can impact or be impacted by the number of credits your student completes during the regular school year. If your student is interested in summer quarter, they should contact their counselor while completing fall quarter registration.
