KAMIAK WEEKLY UPDATE

September 26, 2025

FROM THE PRINCIPAL

Thank you to everyone who participated in our annual Curriculum Night and Club/Activity Fair. The power of the partnership between home and school is rooted in the ongoing conversation about what school is for and how to make the most of our time together. I hope you all see the devotion and professionalism of the Kamiak staff. They truly want to see young people learn and grow.

I am especially grateful to our students who put their clubs/activities/teams on display this week. Kamiak is rich with opportunities that extend beyond the academic day. Thank you so much for putting your extracurricular opportunity on display to our community and welcoming new students to join.

Families – we need your help to make the next move. At home, please ask your child about what clubs, sports, or activities they want to make part of their experience at Kamiak this year. We have dozens of clubs and sports teams representing an exceptionally diverse set of interests. And, if they haven’t yet found their passion in what we offer, encourage them to visit with Assistant Principal Pavilonis to explore the idea of starting a new club.

I have one more note on this topic. For teens, it can be intimidating to show up to a club alone. (Some of the best stories of personal growth happen when we take brave steps in a direction of our own without feeling like we need the safety of a crowd of friends.) While I am not necessarily a big fan of bribery…You might consider offering an incentive to encourage your child to take just such a brave step to try something new that is right for them (especially if they have to go alone).

At Kamiak, we have four big goals:
  • More students career and college ready in Math
  • More students career and college ready in English
  • Better systems when we struggle
  • Stronger sense of belonging for everyone – students, families, and staff

At Curriculum Night, we asked our families to take a moment and give us some feedback on that fourth goal. If we missed you at Curriculum Night or you didn’t have a chance to give your feedback, we’d appreciate a moment of your time sharing your thoughts on a short survey.

Thank you for sharing your voice!

Get Involved, Make an Impact! 👋💜

We hope you’ll consider joining one (or all!) of our Kamiak support organizations: Parent Teacher Organization (PTO), Athletics Booster Club, and Performing Arts Boosters as a donor, volunteer, or active member. These groups play a vital role in supporting staff and student needs, including funding for supplies, scholarships, enrichment programs, and more.

There are so many ways to get involved—helping at events, donating, chaperoning, or simply connecting with other families. PTO and booster events are also a fun way to stay engaged and celebrate what makes high school special.

Washington State Healthy Youth Survey 2025

Our school is participating in the Washington State Healthy Youth Survey during fall 2025. The survey will be given to students in Grades 6, 8, 10 and 12 in large districts and students in Grades 6 through 12 in small school districts. The Healthy Youth Survey includes questions related to physical activity, unintentional and intentional injury, substance use, interpersonal relationships, school experiences, risk and protective factors, and access to school-based services. Survey results are used by schools, communities, and State agencies to plan programs to support our youth and reduce their risks. Participation in the survey is voluntary and steps are taken to ensure student privacy. There are no names or codes used to link a survey back to a student.

Please read the attached Information for Parents/Guardians and Youth Letter for more information about the Healthy Youth Survey. If you have any questions please reach out to Lexy Roundtree (RoundtreeAL@mukilteo.wednet.edu) or Sasha Fraleigh (FraleighAV@mukilteo.wednet.edu).

Being on time to class matters! ⌚

The first minutes of class are when teachers share the learning goals, directions, and warm-ups that set the tone for the entire lesson. Missing those minutes means you start class already behind, and it disrupts your classmates’ learning.

Automatic detentions for tardies is active. This means:
  • If you are not in your assigned class when the bell rings, you will be marked tardy.
  • For every three tardies in a class period, students will receive an automatic detention.
Remember:
  • The first 10 minutes of class are critical for setting you up for success.
  • Being on time shows your readiness and respect—for your teacher, your peers, and your own learning.
  • Every minute counts. Don’t miss out.
Let’s commit to being in class, on time, every day—because learning starts the moment the bell rings.

COUNSELING CORNER

Senior Classroom Lessons and Post-High School Planning

This week, our Counseling Team met with 12th grade students for guidance lesson activities. In our lessons, we discussed students’ current academic status (transcripts), and planning for post-high school opportunities, including college, work, apprenticeships, military, etc. Copies of the information will be available on our website next week. If you would like translated versions of the information, please reach out to your students’ school counselor.

As a reminder, off-campus Running Start students were not expected to attend the senior lessons, and we will send a similar message to your student’s school email with the materials. Students can contact their school counselor if they would like to discuss the materials or identify next steps for their individual plans.

As a reminder, if your student is still working on a plan for after high school or is interested in exploring different pathways, please feel free to encourage them to meet with our Career and College Counselor, Mr. Bryan Stelling. Students can also visit the Kamiak website to explore available resources.

Personalized Pathway Requirement Waiver (SENIORS!)

Does your 12th grade student still have Fine Arts and/or World Language credits needed for graduation? If yes, please read the message below. If your student is unsure, please have them reach out to their counselor to review a copy of their transcript.

Students can waive up to 1.0 Fine Arts credit and up to 2.0 World Language credits for graduation through their Personalized Pathway Requirement (PPR). The Personalized Pathway allows for certain credits in high school to be “flexible” credits to give students more choice in pursuing their interests, based around their post-high school goals.

If your student is planning to waive any remaining Fine Arts and/or World Language credits, they need to meet with their school counselor AS SOON AS POSSIBLE to complete the PPR waiver form. Forms can be found in the Counseling Office. Students are considered not on track for graduation unless they have met with their counselor to confirm a plan for all remaining credits.

Official and Unofficial Transcripts

Transcripts are a cumulative record of your student’s high school courses, grades, and credits. GPA (Grade Point Average) is provided on the transcript and updated each semester as new classes and grades are added. The process for requesting transcripts is outlined below.

Unofficial: This is an informal version of the transcript that outlines previous classes and grades, credits earned, current Kamiak classes, and an overview of remaining graduation requirements. Students can contact their school counselor to obtain a copy of their unofficial transcript.

Official: To request a copy of an official transcript, students should visit the Request a Transcript page of the Kamiak website, located under the Counseling tab. Students will need to create an account in the Parchment application to submit requests. Transcripts will be delivered electronically and can be sent to students themselves, family members, teachers, colleges, programs, etc. Current students can request transcripts for free and should allow 2-3 school days to process requests.

Once a student has graduated, there is a small fee for each transcript requested. We recommend students request a copy for themselves at the end of their senior year so they can keep it for future use.

College Applications: Common App, Transcripts, and Letters of Recommendation

We know there are many seniors who are starting to complete college applications this fall. If your students is applying to schools through The Common Application, they will need to invite their school counselor to complete a School Report. Students should not be sending a counselor (or teacher) an invite unless they have spoken with them about this step first. Please have your student meet with their counselor at least 3-weeks in advance of their first deadline to confirm we have access, and all materials needed to complete our part of the application. To prepare for this meeting, students should also fill out a Personal Data Form, available on the Letters of Recommendation page of the Kamiak website (under the CCRC tab). Hard copies can also be found in the Counseling Office.

For transcripts, please see the directions in the section above. After students invite their counselor into Common App, they will need to log into their Parchment account and request for a transcript to be sent to Common App: First Year. If your student is applying to colleges that are not on the Common App, they may need to submit their transcript directly to these schools.

If your student is applying to schools that require teacher or counselor letters of recommendation, we highly encourage them to meet with recommenders as far in advance of their deadlines as possible (minimum 2 weeks), during available office hours. The more time given, the better your student’s letter can be. Students will need to first approach their recommenders to ask if they are available to write for them. If they say yes, students should invite them into the Common App and give them a copy of the Personal Data Form mentioned above.

Lastly, counselors and teachers do not work evenings, weekends, or during holiday breaks. It is your student’s responsibility to make sure our staff have everything we need in advance so we can meet deadlines and support them in the process. If your student is unsure if they have taken all necessary steps, they can reach out to their school counselor or Mr. Stelling to confirm they are on track. We are here to help!

This is a reminder to our Running Start students about when you are allowed to be on Kamiak’s campus. Running Start students cannot be on our Kamiak campus unless they are attending a class or have a pre-scheduled appointment or activity.
