FROM THE PRINCIPAL

This week, our students had their first experience with what we are calling Intervention & Outreach time. After third period on Monday, students broke out in two directions. Some students went to classrooms to meet with teachers for academic supports (like retaking a test, finishing incomplete work, getting extra help with a concept). On average, teachers requested about seven students in each room, so most of the support was in smaller groups.

This week I heard from students and teachers about their experiences. And, at our PTO meeting (join PTO!) I heard from parents about what they saw from that perspective as well. One student told his teacher that he couldn’t believe how turning in two missing assignments took his grade from NC to B. Another student told me about how she can’t stay after school so this gave her a chance to make up a test she’d missed. A few hundred students got support that is already impacting grades from all our departments – this gives many students a boost of confidence.

Students also broke out into other spaces where they had some choice. This was an interesting experiment in what happens when you give teenagers some freedom. I’m proud to say that our Knights overwhelmingly responded with the maturity and creativity I expect. There were places with students working together on their studies, room for students to get some exercise, enjoy some hi-fi listening, and socializing. We told students to expect something like a university campus and that is indeed how it felt.

Some years ago, my son was a competitive swimmer who couldn’t eat enough calories to replace what he burned off during workouts. We met with a nutritionist who gave advice that has been valuable in many different contexts – including this one. She said, “Appetite follows habit.” Our Intervention & Outreach time is a habit for addressing students’ needs for support. The appetite we want to grow in our school community is for using systems to improve our students’ experience as learners.

We had a fun week of activities that culminated in the students’ Homecoming Dance. Your generous donations of food and volunteerism made the event even better for them. Intervention and Outreach Time is a 45-minute period during the school day that allows students to receive academic support, make up work, or participate in enrichment and interest-based activities.

For students requesting a new photo (Must bring unsatisfactory packet to exchange for the same packet with a new photo), AND for students who have not had a photo taken yet.

Today is the beginning of the 18-day voting period before General Election Day, November 4. Ballots are mailed out by county election offices.
Are you registered to vote? Oct. 27 is the deadline to register to vote or confirm/update voter registration information. You may also register and vote in person at a county voting center through Election Day.

American Mathematics Competition ✖️➕➖➗🟰

The AMC test will be given on November 5 from 2:00-4:00pm in the Kamiak Library. Cost is $10. Sign up and pay in bookkeeping until October 31. See Mrs. Baldridge in E123 or a Math Team member if you have questions. Also, plan to attend the math team meeting on either October 22 or 29 to register online and to practice.

Why take the AMC? You should take the AMC test to showcase mathematical talent for college admissions, qualify for prestigious follow-up competitions like the AIME, develop critical problem-solving skills, and deepen interest in STEM fields. High scores on the AMC can strengthen applications to selective universities, provide opportunities for scholarships, and serve as a valuable indicator of a student's potential, especially in STEM-focused programs.

Friday, October 10
Varsity Boys Football defeated rival Mariner 22–18 on Friday

Monday, October 13
All three Girls Volleyball teams swept Shorecrest—C-Team and JV each won 2–1, and Varsity took a solid 3–0 victory!

Tuesday, October 14
Varsity Girls Swim - Sienna Cordoba had two first place finishes in the Knights win over Archbishop Murphy yesterday. Fiona Ge, Stephanie Yang, Evie Lucas, and Avery Fairchild had top placings as well. Nice job Knights!

C-Team Girls Soccer defeated Stanwood 3-0 with goals by Ella R., Sadi S., and Annalee H., and a shutout from goalkeeper Andrea P. JV earned a 3-0 win over Arlington, while Varsity dominated with a 5-0 victory against Arlington.

C-Team Boys Football won 34 -28 against Mariner

C-Team, JV, and Varsity Girls Volleyball all swept Cascade with 3-0 wins.

Thursday, October 16
JV Girls Soccer dominated with an 8-0 win over Meadowdale, while Varsity Girls Soccer earned a strong 6-0 victory against Mariner.

🤼‍♀️ Kamiak Lady Knights – 2nd Preseason Meeting on Thursday, November 6, 2:15–3:15 PM

Dear Lady Knights and Families,

We’ll be holding our 2nd Preseason Meeting on Thursday, November 6th from 2:15 to 3:15 PM in the Kamiak Yoga Room. This meeting is open to all returning and new wrestlers — especially anyone who missed the first meeting or wants to learn more about the upcoming season.

We are now one month away from the start of the wrestling season!
This is the perfect time to finalize registrations, complete testing, and prepare for what’s shaping up to be our biggest year yet.

If you haven't already done so please make sure you are registered for wrestling on FinalForms. Please complete your registration as soon as possible so you’re cleared for practice and included in team communications. We’ll review the registration process and required forms at the meeting if you need assistance.

🏋️‍♀️ Practice Schedule & Support Network
Monday–Thursday: 4:30 PM – 6:30 PM (Pickup at 6:45 PM)
Friday: 1:00 PM – 3:00 PM (Pickup at 3:15 PM)

The later weekday practices are intentional and athlete-focused.
This schedule allows wrestlers to:
  • Complete homework or attend academic support before practice
  • Participate in after-school clubs and activities
  • Benefit from a larger, more experienced shared coaching staff between Kamiak and Olympic View
  • Reduce congestion and distractions in the wrestling room by avoiding overlap with other programs

Students waiting for practice may use:
  • The Kamiak Library
  • The Mukilteo Public Library
  • Any supervised Kamiak club or study area
We’re also coordinating transportation networks between teammates to ensure everyone can get to and from practice safely.

For all students interested in Winter sports please log into FINAL FORMS and sign all forms and make sure you have a Valid Physical that goes THROUGH the entire season. If it expires mid season you will not be clear to particiapte day one.

Kamiak Theatre Arts presents: Dramafest a Festival of Student Written and Directed One-Act Plays

Dramafest, Kamiak High School's annual Student Written and Directed One-Act Play Fest opens October 20th and runs through October 25th. Seniors in Kamiak’s Drama Department direct their peers in a series of one-act plays. This year, eleven talented seniors have written and directed eleven world premieres. These shows have everything: jump scares, true love, murder mysteries, immortal beings, Shakespeare, fantasy, and so much more!

Dramafest Awards

Dramafest awards are like the Tony awards of Kamiak. After Marathon Day, students and families break for dinner and come back to the stage at 7pm to find out who won Best Actor, Best Supporting Actor, Best Newcomer, Best Show, People’s Choice and so much more. At the end of awards, we will announce the Kamiak Spring Musical! Bring your check book or some cash to participate in a fundraiser for the department. We’ll auction off the privilege of revealing the musical!

Kamiak Winter Play Auditions: PUFFS

All Kamiak students are encouraged to audition for the Winter Play Puffs or Seven Increasingly Eventful Years at a Certain School of Magic and Magic. 

For seven years a certain boy wizard went to a certain Wizard School and conquered evil. This, however, is not his story. This is the story of the Puffs... who just happened to be there too. A tale for anyone who has never been destined to save the world.

Auditions are afterschool Monday, October 27th on the Kamiak stage with Callbacks on Tuesday, October 28th. No acting experience necessary! Audition forms are Available outside the Drama room, PAC 116. See Mr. Sullivan if you have any questions. 

Dramaween: A Halloween Themed Variety Show

The Kamiak Drama Club presents - Dramaween: A Halloween Themed Variety Show on Thursday, October 30th at 7pm on the Kamiak Stage. Come watch performances inspired by Halloween! Enjoy your favorite spooky songs, monologues and scenes pulled from plays, films, and television. Tickets are $10 for Students and Seniors, $15 for Adults. Wear your Halloween costume and for an extra $5, enter the costume contest to see if you are the best dressed! Tickets are available online and at the door.

Kamiak Improv Show - November 6th at 7pm

The Kamiak Improv Team takes on Meadowdale High School in a head-to-head Improv comedy match on November 6th at 7pm on the Kamiak Stage. Come cheer on the improv team as they seek to win the Hogan Cup Improv tournament for the 2nd year in a row. Laugh out loud at the ridiculous antics of seasoned improv students and enjoy the randomness of stories and characters inspired by suggestions from the audience. And best of all, the performance is free! You won't want to miss it!

COUNSELING CORNER

10th Grade Classroom Lessons

This week, our Counseling Team met with 10th grade students to discuss their transcripts and academic planning, share resources for high school program and credit opportunities (including Sno-Isle, Running Start), and complete High School and Beyond Plan (HSBP) activities. As a reminder, the High School and Beyond Plan is a state-mandated graduation requirement for all students, beginning in middle school, that guides them in planning for post-high school education, training, and careers. If you have questions about our lesson materials, please contact your student’s school counselor. 

11th Grade Classroom Lessons

Last week, our Counseling team met with 11th grade students for classroom lessons to discuss their transcripts and academic planning, share resources for post-high school pathways, and begin their High School and Beyond Plan (HSBP) activities. The High School and Beyond Plan is a state-mandated graduation requirement for all students, beginning in middle school, that guides them in planning for post-high school education, training, and careers. Whether your student is in the planning stages or has no idea where to start, we encourage them to meet with our Career and College Counselor, Mr. Bryan Stelling to learn more about opportunities for after high school. 

Personalized Pathway Requirement Waiver (SENIORS!)

Does your 12th grade student still have Fine Arts and/or World Language credits needed for graduation? If yes, please read the message below. If your student is unsure, please have them reach out to their counselor to review a copy of their transcript.
 
Students can waive up to 1.0 Fine Arts credit and up to 2.0 World Language credits for graduation through their Personalized Pathway Requirement (PPR). The Personalized Pathway allows for certain credits in high school to be “flexible” credits to give students more choice in pursuing their interests, based around their post-high school goals.
 
If your student is planning to waive any remaining Fine Arts and/or World Language credits, they need to meet with their school counselor AS SOON AS POSSIBLE to complete the PPR waiver form. Forms can be found in the Counseling Office. Students are considered not on track for graduation unless they have met with their counselor to confirm a plan for all remaining credits.

Transcripts for Post-High School Opportunities

We are in the middle of our post-high school planning season for 12th grade students. Students may be applying to the military, community college, universities, trade schools, apprenticeships, and more this year. Your student may find they need a copy of their official transcript for an application or to be considered for a program. As a reminder, transcripts are a cumulative record of your student’s high school courses, grades, and credits. GPA (Grade Point Average) is provided on the transcript and updated each semester as new classes and grades are added.
 
To request a copy of an official transcript, students should visit the Transcript Request page of the Kamiak website, located under the Counseling tab. Students will need to create an account (using their own personal email) in the Parchment application to submit the request. Transcripts will be delivered electronically within 2-3 school days and can be sent to students themselves, family members, school staff, programs, colleges, etc. Please encourage your students to work with their counselor or their career and college counselor if they need help with this process.
 
An unofficial transcript displays an informal view of your students’ classes and grades, credits earned, and an overview of remaining graduation requirements. Students may want a copy in order to review their academic record and/or self-input information into applications. Students should contact their school counselor to obtain a copy of their unofficial transcript, if needed.

College Applications: Common App, Transcripts, and Letters of Recommendation

We know there are many seniors who are starting to complete college applications this fall. If your students is applying to schools through The Common Application, they will need to invite their school counselor to complete a School Report. Students should not be sending a counselor (or teacher) an invite unless they have spoken with them about this step first. Please have your student meet with their counselor at least 3-weeks in advance of their first deadline to confirm we have access, and all materials needed to complete our part of the application. To prepare for this meeting, students should also fill out a Personal Data Form, available on the Letters of Recommendation page of the Kamiak website (under the CCRC tab). Hard copies can also be found in the Counseling Office.
 
For transcripts, please see the directions in the section above. After students invite their counselor into Common App, they will need to log into their Parchment account and request for a transcript to be sent to Common App: First Year. If your student is applying to colleges that are not on the Common App, they may need to submit their transcript directly to these schools.
 
If your student is applying to schools that require teacher or counselor letters of recommendation, we highly encourage them to meet with recommenders as far in advance of their deadlines as possible (minimum 2 weeks), during available office hours. The more time given, the better your student’s letter can be. Students will need to first approach their recommenders to ask if they are available to write for them. If they say yes, students should invite them into the Common App and give them a copy of the Personal Data Form mentioned above.
 
Lastly, counselors and teachers do not work evenings, weekends, or during holiday breaks. It is your student’s responsibility to make sure our staff have everything we need in advance so we can meet deadlines and support them in the process. If your student is unsure if they have taken all necessary steps, they can reach out to their school counselor or Mr. Stelling to confirm they are on track. We are here to help!

Does your student need support with planning for after high school? We highly recommend meeting with our Career and College Counselor, Mr. Bryan Stelling. Whether your student is interested in college, an apprenticeship, the military, trade/tech school, a gap year, internships, going straight into the workforce, etc. we have resources that can help them plan and prepare. Please don’t hesitate to reach out.

One of the Washington State-mandated requirements for graduation is to complete your High School and Beyond Plan. Make sure to log into your High School and Beyond Plan portal to see if yours has been marked as completed. If not. you may come to the CCRC and work with Mrs. Cline on it. You can also find step by step directions here. It is due by December 12.
