KAMIAK WEEKLY UPDATE

October 31, 2025

FROM THE PRINCIPAL

One of the best parts of my job is spending time in classrooms with teachers as they teach and students as they learn.

In the last week, I have had short and long visits in classrooms across nearly every department. A couple days ago, I sat with some ninth grade students who were using text evidence to support a claim about a particular character in their novel. This morning, I visited with seniors doing nearly the same activity – comparing analyses of characters in three different stories including one from their novel. Yesterday, I visited with seniors who were analyzing film and discussing clues they’d perhaps overlooked. They were preparing for a group presentation around the complexity of thematic elements in the film. In a statistics class I visited earlier in the week, mathematicians were using some modeling to make sense of a complex way of predicting outcomes in a scenario. In one math class, students were working with compound interest on bank accounts so they could plan further ahead in a sample timeline.

As we wrap up the first quarter of the school year, students are deeply engaged in many different concepts and learning complex skills. If you haven’t asked recently, you might ask your child what they are learning or doing that really challenges them. Or, you might ask if they have picked up a new skill that is a source of pride.

I’m impressed by our engaged learners – and I am very proud of them!

STUDENT AND FAMILY INFORMATION

Mukilteo School District to Celebrate 30 Years of Giving Back at Annual Bazaar

The Mukilteo School District’s 30th Annual Holiday Bazaar kicks off the holiday season on Saturday, November 1, at 10 a.m. at Mariner High School. The bazaar will feature over 100 local vendors offering handmade and commercial goods, food carts, and a student-run store.

For three decades, district staff have volunteered their time to organize this popular community event, which raises funds for scholarships benefiting Mukilteo graduates pursuing higher education.

Community Food Support Resources

There has been considerable concern regarding the potential cessation of SNAP benefits at the end of this week due to the ongoing government shutdown. With uncertainty surrounding the situation starting November 1, we want to provide you with information about local food support resources that are currently available:
1. Local Food Banks

2. Kamiak’s Basic Food Pantry
Our school has a small food pantry available for students and families. Items are available on a first-come, first-served basis as we rely on donations. Families can reach out to their student’s school counselor or Student Support Advocate to schedule a time to stop by during school hours.

3. Thanksgiving Meal Support
There are a couple local options for families who could use help with a Thanksgiving meal this year:
  • Thanksgiving Baskets (Limited Spots): The South Everett-Mukilteo Rotary Club is providing baskets with a frozen turkey and all the trimmings for families who have access to an oven. Reach out to your Student Support Advocate
Hot Meal Options: Several community programs are offering free hot meal deliveries or in-person Thanksgiving dinners around the holiday.

📸 Picture Retake Day Reminder!

Our last picture retake will take place on Friday, November 7th from 9:00 AM- 1:00 PM in the Gym Foyer.

Students who missed the original Picture Day will have their photos taken at this time. Passes will be delivered to those students Wednesday and Thursday next week during their 3rd period classes.

If your student is a running start student and/or student who doesn't attend Kamiak for the entire school day and hasn't taken their photo, please share with them that they can attend either before or after their class(es) at Kamiak or reach out to Ms. Pavilonis or Lexy Roundtree with questions.

If you already had your picture taken and purchased your photos, but would like a retake, please complete the Retake Request Form before the end of the School Day on Wednesday, November 5th to ensure that you receive your pass on Thursday.

Still need to order pictures. Order Pictures Here

Thank you and remember to bring your best smile! 😊

Let’s Keep Our Students Safe - Drive Slow and Stay Cautious

Now that we are at the beginning of the darker months, we would like to remind everyone to exercise extra caution when driving near the school, especially in designated school zones. Many students walk to school, and reduced visibility from darkness, rain, or fog can make it difficult to see pedestrians. Please drive slowly, stay alert, and help everyone come and go from school safely.

Supporting Youth in a Digital World

Mukilteo School District is proud to welcome Dr. Lucía Magis-Weinberg, a globally recognized expert in adolescent brain development, for two powerful virtual sessions this October: one in English and one in Spanish.

Thursday, November 6, 6 to 7 p.m. (Session in English)
English language event: Zoom link

This session will give you the practical tools and confidence to set healthy limits, foster digital wellness, and guide your children to be responsible digital citizens. We will cover creating a family media plan, establishing clear rules, and managing screen time without constant battles.

Together, you will learn to mentor, rather than monitor, so your kids build a positive and safe relationship with technology.

Your Voice Matters: Serve on a School District Committee

Mukilteo School District invites you to help shape important decisions about curriculum, budget, and student services by serving on a district standing committee. Interested in learning more or volunteering? Join us for a Zoom meeting on Monday, November 17 at 4 p.m. To receive the Zoom link, please RSVP by Wednesday, November 12.

Committee members are elected by attendees at the meeting and may serve on one committee per year. We would love to have you involved!

During this year’s meeting, the school district will be looking to fill these positions on standing committees:

  • BUDGET COMMITTEE: The committee reviews and provides input to the superintendent regarding board and districtwide initiatives and preliminary budget recommendations. The committee meets twice a month from late January through early May. There is one parent opening (two-year term).
  • RESEARCH AND ASSESSMENT: The committee reviews proposals for research conducted in the district for approval and makes recommendations regarding the school district’s assessment program. The committee meets when research proposals are submitted and need to be reviewed. This is generally twice per year. There is one parent opening on the committee this year (two-year term).
  • STUDENT RIGHTS AND RESPONSIBILITIES: The committee reviews and recommends revisions to the Exceptional Misconduct portion of the Student Rights and Responsibilities Handbook. It meets once a year, usually in May. There are two openings this year (two-year terms).
  • INSTRUCTIONAL MATERIALS COMMITTEE: The committee reviews and decides upon curriculum materials recommendations by district and school teams, ensuring all instructional resources align with district standards, state regulations, and reflect community values. The Instructional Materials Committee makes recommendations to the school board for adoption. The committee has meetings in the afternoon, two or three times a year, and committee members serve three-year terms. There are three parent/family positions open this year.
  • SPECIAL PROGRAMS: The committee's purpose is to foster communication and learn about the district’s multilingual education, intervention, highly capable, and special education programs, as well as provide input on annual applications and program evaluation efforts. The committee meets twice a year, usually in the late afternoon or evening. There are two parent/family member openings (two-year terms) for parents who have students receiving one of the following services: Title 1, Highly Capable Program.

COUNSELING CORNER

High School and Beyond Plan (HSBP)

The High School and Beyond Plan is a state-mandated graduation requirement for all students, beginning in middle school, that guides them in planning for post-high school education, training, and careers. Counselors met with students earlier this fall to help them access the application and work on required tasks. For more information on your student’s grade-level activities, please visit our High School and Beyond page on the Kamiak website. https://ka.mukilteoschools.org/hsbp

Sno-Isle Registration Opens Soon!

The Sno-Isle Tech Skill Center registration opens on Monday, November 3rd at 12:00pm for the 2026-2027 school year. 10th and 11th grade students are eligible to apply. Interested students should visit the Sno-Isle Tech website in advance to begin an application (sc.mukilteoschools.org/). We highly recommend students hit submit on their application as registration opens. If your student is considering applying, please have them reach out to their school counselor to confirm the program will fit into their graduation plan.

Additionally, Sno-Isle will have an Open House on Saturday, November 1st from 10am-2pm. We encourage families to attend to learn more about available opportunities.

Transcripts for Post-High School Opportunities

We are in the middle of our post-high school planning season for 12th grade students. Students may be applying to the military, community college, universities, trade schools, apprenticeships, and more this year. Your student may find they need a copy of their official transcript for an application or to be considered for a program. As a reminder, transcripts are a cumulative record of your student’s high school courses, grades, and credits. GPA (Grade Point Average) is provided on the transcript and updated each semester as new classes and grades are added.

To request a copy of an official transcript, students should visit the Transcript Request page of the Kamiak website, located under the Counseling tab. Students will need to create an account (using their own personal email) in the Parchment application to submit the request. Transcripts will be delivered electronically within 2-3 school days and can be sent to students themselves, family members, school staff, programs, colleges, etc. Please encourage your students to work with their counselor or their career and college counselor if they need help with this process.

An unofficial transcript displays an informal view of your students’ classes and grades, credits earned, and an overview of remaining graduation requirements. Students may want a copy in order to review their academic record and/or self-input information into applications. Students should contact their school counselor to obtain a copy of their unofficial transcript, if needed.

College Applications: Common App, Transcripts, and Letters of Recommendation

We know there are many seniors who are starting to complete college applications this fall. If your students is applying to schools through The Common Application, they will need to invite their school counselor to complete a School Report. Students should not be sending a counselor (or teacher) an invite unless they have spoken with them about this step first. Please have your student meet with their counselor at least 3-weeks in advance of their first deadline to confirm we have access, and all materials needed to complete our part of the application. To prepare for this meeting, students should also fill out a Personal Data Form, available on the Letters of Recommendation page of the Kamiak website (under the CCRC tab). Hard copies can also be found in the Counseling Office.

For transcripts, please see the directions in the section above. After students invite their counselor into Common App, they will need to log into their Parchment account and request for a transcript to be sent to Common App: First Year. If your student is applying to colleges that are not on the Common App, they may need to submit their transcript directly to these schools.

If your student is applying to schools that require teacher or counselor letters of recommendation, we highly encourage them to meet with recommenders as far in advance of their deadlines as possible (minimum 2 weeks), during available office hours. The more time given, the better your student’s letter can be. Students will need to first approach their recommenders to ask if they are available to write for them. If they say yes, students should invite them into the Common App and give them a copy of the Personal Data Form mentioned above.

Lastly, counselors and teachers do not work evenings, weekends, or during holiday breaks. It is your student’s responsibility to make sure our staff have everything we need in advance so we can meet deadlines and support them in the process. If your student is unsure if they have taken all necessary steps, they can reach out to their school counselor or Mr. Stelling to confirm they are on track. We are here to help!

Does your student need support with planning for after high school? We highly recommend meeting with our Career and College Counselor, Mr. Bryan Stelling. Whether your student is interested in college, an apprenticeship, the military, trade/tech school, a gap year, internships, going straight into the workforce, etc. we have resources that can help them plan and prepare. Please don’t hesitate to reach out.

Resource Corner

School Attendance Resource for Families - Does your student struggle to attend school? The School-Avoidance Support Group at Seattle Children’s Psychiatry & Behavioral Medicine offers a welcoming, evidence-based space for students and families to reclaim confidence around school participation. Their team helps youth ages 4–17 explore what’s getting in the way of going to class and build skills to navigate fear, anxiety, or avoidance. Parents and caregivers will learn strategies for how to plan for re-engagement, how to collaborate with the school, and how to respond to avoidance behaviors in a way that fosters attendance.
