KAMIAK WEEKLY UPDATE

November 14, 2025

FROM THE PRINCIPAL

Here at Kamiak we have a number of distinguished members of our teaching and support staff. Several have won Mukilteo School District’s highest award – the Lighthouse Award. We have Hall of Fame teachers at Kamiak as well. Every year, members of our staff are recognized for their excellence in their various roles. We are privileged to have such a strong teaching and support staff for our students and community.

Today, we had the opportunity to recognize Mrs. Emily Palmiter as she was selected the Washington State Art Educator of the Year. Emily has been teaching since 2006, and here at Kamiak since 2016. During that time thousands of young people have cultivated their artistic excellence with her instruction. Emily has taught all levels of art – introductory to Advanced Placement. Her students have left Kamiak with refined art skills and abilities, some of them choosing careers in the arts.

We are so proud of Emily and her achievement – congratulations on behalf of the entire Mukilteo community!

Holiday Gifts for Families in our Community 🎁

Each year, Kamiak works with our local middle schools to help provide holiday gifts for families in our community. This year we are helping 62 children in the Mukilteo School District. Many 3rd period classes adopted families this year and are working to fill their gift requests. But, if your child’s 3rd period did not adopt a family, or if you are able to help by providing additional gifts, please take a look at our Amazon Wish List. Items can be shipped directly to Kamiak High School. Thank you for your support this holiday season.

Community Food Support Resources

COUNSELING CORNER

Running Start Winter Quarter Registration

If your student is currently enrolled in Running Start, winter quarter registration has begun! To register for classes, your student will need to complete the quarterly Running Start Verification form with their Kamiak School Counselor. The verification form is available on the college website and the Running Start page of the Kamiak website (CCRC section). All directions and required steps for this process were sent to student’s school outlook emails in October. Please have your student review all directions before meeting with their counselor.

High School and Beyond Plan (HSBP)

The High School and Beyond Plan is a state-mandated graduation requirement for all students, beginning in middle school, that guides them in planning for post-high school education, training, and careers. Counselors met with students earlier this fall to help them access the application and work on required tasks. For more information on your student’s grade-level activities, please visit our High School and Beyond page on the Kamiak website. https://ka.mukilteoschools.org/hsbp

Sno-Isle Registration

The Sno-Isle Tech Skill Center registration is still open specific programs for the 2026-2027 school year. 10th and 11th grade students are eligible to apply. Interested students should visit the Sno-Isle Tech Skills Center website to begin an application. If your student applies or has already applied, please have them reach out to their school counselor to confirm the program will fit into their graduation plan.

Post-High School Planning for Seniors

We are in the middle of our post-high school planning season for 12th grade students. Students are in the process of applying to all types of opportunities including the military, community college, universities, internships, trade schools, apprenticeships, or preparing their resume for the workforce. Does your student need help with planning? We highly recommend that students meet with our Career and College Counselor, Bryan Stelling to explore their interests and opportunities. Students can sign up for individual appointments in the Counseling Office. If parents would like to attend a meeting, they should call the office to schedule directly.

We know there are many seniors who are starting to complete college applications this fall. If your students is applying to schools through The Common Application, they will need to invite their school counselor to complete a School Report. Students should not be sending a counselor (or teacher) an invite unless they have spoken with them about this step first. Please have your student meet with their counselor at least 3-weeks in advance of their first deadline to confirm we have access, and all materials needed to complete our part of the application. To prepare for this meeting, students should also fill out a Personal Data Form, available on the Letters of Recommendation page of the Kamiak website (under the CCRC tab). Hard copies can also be found in the Counseling Office.

For transcripts, please visit the Transcript Request page on the Kamiak website (under Counseling). After students invite their counselor into their Common App, they will need to log into their Parchment account and request for an official transcript to be sent to Common App: First Year. If your student is applying to colleges that are not on the Common App, they may need to submit their transcript directly to these schools. For unofficial copies of the transcript, students should contact their School Counselor.

If your student is applying to schools that require teacher or counselor letters of recommendation, we highly encourage them to meet with recommenders as far in advance of their deadlines as possible (minimum 2 weeks), during available office hours. The more time given, the better your student’s letter can be. Students will need to first approach their recommenders to ask if they are available to write for them. If they say yes, students should invite them into the Common App and give them a copy of the Personal Data Form mentioned above.

Lastly, counselors and teachers do not work evenings, weekends, or during holiday breaks. It is your student’s responsibility to make sure our staff have everything we need in advance so we can meet deadlines and support them in the process. If your student is unsure if they have taken all necessary steps, they can reach out to their school counselor or Mr. Stelling to confirm they are on track. We are here to help!
