KAMIAK WEEKLY UPDATE

November 21, 2025

FROM THE PRINCIPAL

This past week, we held our fourth Intervention and Outreach Day. This activity is a relatively short window of time (about 45 minutes) where students receive extra support and opportunities to address needs related to a specific class. We want to build students’ skills for seeking and receiving support.

We have seen 2718 invitations for students to engage in meetings with teachers during this time (nearly 700 students were invited last Monday) and the results are quite strong. In a short visit with a teacher, we see students retaking tests, making up missed work, and getting help with learning class content. Our Ninth Grade On Track (passing all classes) numbers should make us especially proud – way to go teachers, ninth graders, and your families! For all students, grades continue to rise.

Last week, we introduced a new communication on the Sunday night prior to Intervention and Outreach Day. It’s a short message asking parents/guardians to remind their children they have been invited by a teacher…and then to ask about how it went when they get home Monday Night. Thank you to all our families who helped us this week with that communication.
Mr Shurtleff

We are almost one-third of the way through the school year. This is about the time parents ask me how they can get involved and support us here at Kamiak. The best way to support a high school student (and our whole school) is to show up. Students at this age are exploring their interests and growing their skills. They want supportive fans who are there to cheer them on and help make their interests possible. Here are three great ways to get involved as we shift from November to December:

  • Show up by asking advisors/coaches if they could use any help (if your child is in a club or a sport). Students do a lot of their own work to make their clubs and sports function. But, there is often something a family member can offer that the group needs.

  • Show up as a fan – loud, proud, and positive. Our young people thrive on the positive attention they receive for the hard work and devotion they put into their interests. They want to see and hear you celebrating them.

There is one more way to get involved…but it’s mostly at home. Consider showing up for a conversation with your child about their interests they aren’t yet exploring. There is always room for one more member of most clubs all year. Our sports teams have roles for players and student-supporters in every season. It takes some encouragement for most people to feel like they can join something new – maybe some encouragement from you will make the difference.

Interesting Fact: Abby loves to go on walks!

Holiday Gifts for Families in our Community 🎁

Each year, Kamiak works with our local middle schools to help provide holiday gifts for families in our community. This year we are helping 62 children in the Mukilteo School District. Many 3rd period classes adopted families this year and are working to fill their gift requests. But, if your child’s 3rd period did not adopt a family, or if you are able to help by providing additional gifts, please take a look at our Amazon Wish List. Items can be shipped directly to Kamiak High School. Thank you for your support this holiday season.

ATHLETICS

Kamiak Girls Wrestling Featured in the Everett Herald 🤼‍♀️

The Kamiak Girls Wrestling program is celebrating an exciting milestone this week: the team was featured in the Everett Herald in an article titled “Strength in numbers: Kamiak girls wrestling takes next step.”

The article highlights the record turnout for the Lady Knights this season and the strong team culture that is emerging as the program continues to grow. With more athletes than ever before, the team is building depth, developing new leaders, and creating more opportunities for girls to participate in one of the fastest-growing sports in Washington.

Head Coach John Knight-Baldwin praised the commitment of the athletes and the support of the Kamiak community, noting that this year’s growth reflects both the hard work of returning wrestlers and the enthusiasm of new team members joining the mat for the first time.

This recognition from the Everett Herald is a proud moment for the program and a great reflection of the positive momentum within Kamiak Athletics.

COUNSELING CORNER

1st Quarter Grades

1st quarter grades have been finalized. Please consider working with your student to review their grades and come up with a plan, if needed, to address any academic concerns. We highly encourage students to work directly with their teachers to discuss and problem-solve grade concerns. If you have a 12th grade student, first quarter grades are an important indicator of on-track graduation status. Most of our seniors need to pass most, if not all, of their current classes to graduate. If you have questions about your students’ grades, please don’t hesitate to contact their teachers or school counselor for support.

Running Start Winter Quarter Registration

If your student is currently enrolled in Running Start, winter quarter registration has begun! To register for classes, your student will need to complete the quarterly Running Start Verification form with their Kamiak School Counselor. The verification form is available on the college website and the Running Start page of the Kamiak website (CCRC section). All directions and required steps for this process were sent to student’s school outlook emails in October. Please have your student review all directions before meeting with their counselor. Students should meet with their counselor as soon as possible as classes are already starting to fill up for next quarter!
