KAMIAK WEEKLY UPDATE

December 5, 2025

FROM THE PRINCIPAL

One of my favorite parts of being a principal is the time I spend in classrooms with students and their teachers. This week, my focus has been in English Language Arts among 9th, 10th, and 12th grade students.

The learning happening in these classes is astounding! The students impress me with the way they think deeply about their literacy skills. I was in a small group conversation about indigenous peoples in Shakesperean England. They were thoughtful and pulling in knowledge from history classes and other readings. In another class, I sat next to a student who let me see her essay draft (which was due the next morning). Not only was it good writing, but she was so proud of what she’d prepared. I love seeing students’ joy with the results of their hard work. In two of the classes I visited, students engaged in prewriting conversations about the class content – listening and asking one another challenging questions.

At Kamiak, we want all our students reading, writing, speaking, and listening each and every day (and many times each day). I am so proud of our teachers for the preparation and delivery of lessons that challenge students to their potential.

On behalf of our athletes, coaches, and fans, thank you to our Kamiak Athletic Booster Club for the custom gym wall mats. Thank you also to our District Support Services team for the installation and partnership. This project required a lot of coordination and nearly two years to complete. We think the finished product looks great! Come cheer on the Knights at one of our games to see them in person.

STUDENT AND FAMILY INFORMATION

Congratulations Kamiak Students of the Month for November

The following students were selected by Kamiak staff as Students of the Month for November 2025 due to their outstanding academics, school and/or community leadership and activities and/or athletics.
November students of the month

Phoenix Uphaus - CTE Student of the Week

CTE Course: Forensic Science and Biotechnology
Nominating Teacher: Mrs. Maggie Lewis
What do you like about the course? I always loved hearing about new Forensic Science cases and new discoveries related to Biotechnology. These courses helped me gain a lot of insight into what I want to do in the future and there’s a great teacher.
Plans after high school? Either attend CWU/EWU with a minor in Forensic Science or go to trade school.
Interesting Fact: Phoenix lives with a total of 7 dogs, 6 cats, over 20 chickens and one duck.

Phoenix consistently asks the kinds of critical-thinking questions that are needed for someone who works in the field of criminal justice. Just as a scientist would, he doesn’t shy away from challenging puzzles – some of which may be as yet unsolvable by science. Phoenix is also incredibly hard-working, shows great leadership in class and is always willing to lend a hand to someone who is struggling. It has been an honor to have him in class the past two years!

Inclement Weather Plans ❄️🌧️

SCHOOL CLOSURES AND DELAYS
With the sudden drop in temperatures, we thought it would be helpful to give a refresher on what to do in the event school is delayed or canceled due to inclement weather conditions or other events. Bus routes may also be affected by unsafe travel conditions.

The announcement of a school closure or delay is usually made early in the morning. All authorized parents and guardians will receive a ParentSquare message if school is closed or delayed. If you have a mobile phone number on file with your child's school, you should also receive a text message.

Updated school closure and delay information will also be posted on the school district’s website, on the FlashAlert website, and the district Facebook page and Instagram page. If school is canceled, the school day will be made up later in the year. If bus routes are limited due to snow or ice on roadways, the alternate routes are listed on the district transportation website. 🚌🚌🚌🚌

In addition to the mass communication system, there are other options for receiving a text message in the event of a school closure or delay. When the school district announces a change in the schedule, it notifies the local TV and radio stations through a service called FlashAlert. You can receive a text message directly from FlashAlert whenever the school district posts a notice to that system. You can receive that service by signing up for FlashAlert Messenger. Many local TV and radio stations also offer similar services. Most of the major radio and television stations broadcast information about school closures.

EARLY DISMISSAL
Conditions could develop during the school day that may require school to be dismissed earlier than planned. Information about early dismissals will be provided to local radio and television stations and distributed through the school district’s mass communication system. If school is dismissed early, and transportation home is not available, a child will be released only to his or her parent or guardian or to a person previously authorized by the parent or guardian. We ask that parents please bring photo identification (such as a driver’s license) to ensure student safety. School staff will remain at the school until all students have been released.

Check this page on our website to learn more about Emergency Information.

COUNSELING CORNER

1st Quarter Grades

1st quarter grades have been finalized. Please consider working with your student to review their grades and come up with a plan, if needed, to address any academic concerns. We highly encourage students to work directly with their teachers to discuss and problem-solve grade concerns. If you have a 12th grade student, first quarter grades are an important indicator of on-track graduation status. Most of our seniors need to pass most, if not all, of their current classes to graduate. If you have questions about your students’ grades, please don’t hesitate to contact their teachers or school counselor for support.

Senior Graduation Requirements

Seniors should be in the process of completing their 12th grade High School and Beyond Plan (HSBP). If your student has not finished their HSBP tasks and need assistance, they can contact our coordinator, Ms. Theresa Cline. Her office is in the Kamiak Counseling Office and students can make an appointment with her or drop by during lunchtimes. HSBP Deadline: Friday, December 12th

If your student is completing online classes for credits this year, we highly recommend they get started on these as soon as possible. Many of these courses can take several months to complete and every year we have students who push the work to the last minute. Your student will not be eligible to participate in graduation if they have not completed all required credits.

For students enrolled in our Plato Credit Recovery class, keep up the hard work! Many students have quite a few credits to make up and taking time to set up a formal check-in with their Plato teacher this month can be a great opportunity to confirm their status and make a plan prior to the upcoming break.

Students enrolled in Washington State History, should contact their teacher, Mr. Semeraro, if they have concerns about deadlines for the course. We have quite a few seniors who are not passing the class at this time, and we hope that students can work hard to catch up and pass for the semester. This is a graduation-required class for those that still need the credit.

Running Start Winter Quarter Registration

If your student is currently enrolled in Running Start, winter quarter registration is open. Students only have two weeks left to complete registration steps with their counselor before winter break. Classes are filling up fast! Since counselors do not work over the break, all verification forms should be completed prior to December 19th. Please encourage your student to reach out to us ASAP!

The Running Start verification form is available on the college website and the Running Start page of the Kamiak website (under the CCRC section). Directions for registration were sent to student’s school outlook emails in October.

School Counselors are designated by student’s last name:
