KAMIAK WEEKLY UPDATE

December 12, 2025

FROM THE PRINCIPAL

Knight Community,

On behalf of the very many people who will experience the miracle of a community that cares, thank you for supporting our annual HOPE Holiday Drive. Whatever role you had – donating, transporting, coordinating, encouraging – know that our teamwork has made a difference for many.

This annual tradition unites students and staff together to support families in our community who are experiencing a time of need. The generosity of the Kamiak community plus the coordination of our Leadership students makes all of this possible.

All of our giving is presented anonymously to families, which makes it impossible for recipients to know whom to thank. So, I offer this to you on their behalf: thank you so very much.
Mr Shurtleff

World Language Proficiency Exam - Earn credit for fluency!

If you are fluent reading, writing, and speaking another language you could earn up to 4.0 high school credits by taking the World Language Proficiency Exam. If you are interested, please have your student see Ms. Spies in the Counseling office during lunch drop-ins. The deadline to register is Friday, January 16th

The Mukilteo School District provides students in grades 8-12 with an opportunity to earn up to 4.0 high school credits by taking a World Language proficiency exam (WLPE). Students are tested on their reading, writing, and speaking skills in the language selected and must be able to do all three to earn credit. Students earn a “pass” grade and not a letter grade for any credits awarded and therefore does not affect their grade point average. These credits do not count towards the 2.0 external credits (see curriculum guide) that students are allowed to apply to their transcript, and they do count toward the World Language graduation requirement.

For a list of the languages currently being offered to test in, Visit Here.

November students of the month

Yoriel Talavera-Hernandez - CTE Student of the Week

Yoriel Talavera- Hernandez picture
CTE Course: Manufacturing Technology 1A
Nominating Teacher: Ms. Shanholtzer
What do you like about the course? I like working with other people, being able to connect, working and building things in general. I’ve used a lot of these tools before. I grew up building things and doing things with my family like cars and wood. I gets easy when you actually try.
Plans after high school? I may be going to Puerto Rico to study and work in auto mechanics with my family. I can work on a job that I’m interested in while also studying.

Yoriel joined us a few weeks into the 1st semester. He hit the ground running and quickly became a Manufacturing Rockstar. He takes pride in his work and you can see that every aspect of a project is carefully considered and executed. Yoriel is a leader in the classroom with a huge heart, willingness to help others, and a positive attitude.

Inclement Weather Plans ❄️🌧️

SCHOOL CLOSURES AND DELAYS
With the sudden drop in temperatures, we thought it would be helpful to give a refresher on what to do in the event school is delayed or canceled due to inclement weather conditions or other events. Bus routes may also be affected by unsafe travel conditions.

The announcement of a school closure or delay is usually made early in the morning. All authorized parents and guardians will receive a ParentSquare message if school is closed or delayed. If you have a mobile phone number on file with your child's school, you should also receive a text message.

Updated school closure and delay information will also be posted on the school district’s website, on the FlashAlert website, and the district Facebook page and Instagram page. If school is canceled, the school day will be made up later in the year. If bus routes are limited due to snow or ice on roadways, the alternate routes are listed on the district transportation website. 🚌🚌🚌🚌

In addition to the mass communication system, there are other options for receiving a text message in the event of a school closure or delay. When the school district announces a change in the schedule, it notifies the local TV and radio stations through a service called FlashAlert. You can receive a text message directly from FlashAlert whenever the school district posts a notice to that system. You can receive that service by signing up for FlashAlert Messenger. Many local TV and radio stations also offer similar services. Most of the major radio and television stations broadcast information about school closures.

EARLY DISMISSAL
Conditions could develop during the school day that may require school to be dismissed earlier than planned. Information about early dismissals will be provided to local radio and television stations and distributed through the school district’s mass communication system. If school is dismissed early, and transportation home is not available, a child will be released only to his or her parent or guardian or to a person previously authorized by the parent or guardian. We ask that parents please bring photo identification (such as a driver’s license) to ensure student safety. School staff will remain at the school until all students have been released.

Check this page on our website to learn more about Emergency Information.

COUNSELING CORNER

Senior Graduation Requirements

Seniors should be in the process of completing their 12th grade High School and Beyond Plan (HSBP). If your student has not finished their HSBP tasks and need assistance, they can contact our coordinator, Ms. Theresa Cline. Her office is in the Kamiak Counseling Office and students can make an appointment with her or drop by during lunchtimes. HSBP Deadline: Today, Friday, December 12th

If your student is completing online classes for credits this year, we highly recommend they get started on these as soon as possible. Many of these courses can take several months to complete and every year we have students who push the work to the last minute. Your student will not be eligible to participate in graduation if they have not completed all required credits.

For students enrolled in our Plato Credit Recovery class, keep up the hard work! Many students have quite a few credits to make up and taking time to set up a formal check-in with their Plato teacher this month can be a great opportunity to confirm their status and make a plan prior to the upcoming break.

Students enrolled in Washington State History, should contact their teacher, Mr. Semeraro, if they have concerns about deadlines for the course. We have quite a few seniors who are not passing the class at this time, and we hope that students can work hard to catch up and pass for the semester. This is a graduation-required class for those that still need the credit.

College Applications: Common App, Transcripts, and Letters of Recommendation

If your student is applying to colleges and universities through Common App, there are sections of the application that their school counselor will need to complete. Please have your student make an appointment with their counselor before winter break. To prepare for this meeting, students should fill out a Personal Data Form. Hard copies can be found in the Counseling Office and digital copies are on the Kamiak website in the Letters of Recommendation section. To prepare for this meeting, students should also fill out a Personal Data Form. Hard copies of the form can be found in the Counseling Office. Students can also access a digital version on the Kamiak website (CCRC at Letters of Recommendation).

After students invite their counselor into Common App, they will need to log into their Parchment account and request for a transcript to be sent to Common App: First Year (see directions below). If your student is applying to colleges that are not on the Common App, they may need to submit their transcript directly to these schools. As a reminder, counselors do not have access to official transcripts.

To request a copy of an official transcript through Parchment, students should visit the Transcript Request page of the Kamiak website. Students will need to create a Parchment account (using their own personal email) to submit the request. Transcripts will be delivered electronically within 2-3 school days and can be sent to students themselves, family members, school staff, programs, colleges, etc. If your student needs an unofficial transcript, they can contact their counselor for a copy.

Lastly, counselors and teachers do not work evenings, weekends, or during holiday breaks. It is your student’s responsibility to make sure our staff have everything we need in advance so we can meet deadlines and support them in the process. We run into issues every year where students do not plan ahead and try to email us during the break to assist with their applications. If your student has an early January deadline, please let them know to come see counseling ASAP if they haven’t already.

Running Start Winter Quarter Registration

If your student is currently enrolled in Running Start, winter quarter registration is open. Students only have one week left to complete registration steps with their counselor before winter break. Classes are filling up fast! Since counselors do not work over the break, all verification forms should be completed prior to December 19th. Please encourage your student to reach out to us ASAP!

The Running Start verification form is available on the college website and the Running Start page of the Kamiak website (under the CCRC section). Directions for registration were sent to student’s school outlook emails in October.

Post-High School Planning for Seniors

As the post-high school planning season slows down for some, we want to remind families that we are here to support your students in pursuing their goals, whether that be the workforce, military, college, trade schools/apprenticeships, or any other opportunity. Does your student need help with planning? We highly recommend that students meet with our Career and College Counselor, Bryan Stelling to explore their interests and opportunities. Students can sign up for individual appointments in the Counseling Office. If parents would like to attend a meeting, they can contact the office by phone to schedule directly.

As we near winter break, please remind your student that counselors do not work during the holidays. If there is anything they need for any upcoming deadlines, we ask that they reach out to us as soon as possible to ensure we can support them in the process. If your student is unsure if they have taken all necessary steps, they can reach out to their school counselor or Mr. Stelling to confirm they are on track.
