KAMIAK WEEKLY UPDATE

January 9, 2026

FROM THE PRINCIPAL

I want our students to have experiences at Kamiak that best prepare them for the plans they have for life after high school. Whether they are going off to industry, the military, college/university, or some other opportunity, I want their years as Knights to open doors to their dreams.

Dual-credit (which earns both high school and college credit at the same time) is one great opportunity for our students. There are three main ways students can earn dual-credit at Kamiak:
  • Advanced Placement (AP) classes
  • College in the High School
  • Running Start

There are reasons students would prefer each of those options depending on their individual plans. This week, a guest-written article was included in The Gauntlet (our student newspaper) that gave the perspective of students who prioritize class rank as their most important outcome of high school. I have asked Mr. Stelling (our Career and College Readiness Counselor) to add some information about Advanced Placement coursework to that perspective. (see below)

Always, I recommend students talk with their counselor about how to get the most from high school while unlocking opportunities they want to experience after high school.

Why Advanced Placement Courses at Kamiak High School Matter
Choosing the right academic pathway in high school is an important decision for both students and parents. At Kamiak High School, Advanced Placement (AP) courses have long been a cornerstone of academic excellence, offering students an opportunity to challenge themselves while preparing for college and beyond. Understanding the benefits of AP courses can help families make informed choices that align with students’ goals, interests, and strengths.

AP Courses Signal Academic Rigor to Colleges
Colleges and universities—especially highly selective institutions—value rigor. Advanced Placement courses are recognized nationally and globally as a gold standard for challenging high school academics. When admissions officers review applications, they look not only at grades, but also at the level of challenge a student has taken on. AP courses clearly demonstrate a student’s willingness to engage in demanding, college-level work while still in high school.
Unlike many other options, AP courses are standardized and externally validated. Colleges know what an AP course represents because the curriculum and assessments are overseen by the College Board, making AP transcripts easy to evaluate and trust.

Taught by Specially Certified Teachers
AP courses are not simply “harder” classes; they are carefully designed college-level experiences. AP teachers must complete specialized training and certification to teach these courses. At Kamiak High School, AP instructors bring deep subject knowledge, proven instructional skill, and a commitment to preparing students for advanced academic work. This combination creates classrooms that foster critical thinking, strong writing, analytical reasoning, and academic confidence.
A Strong Advantage in College Admissions
While class rank is one factor in college admissions, it is far from the only one. Colleges take a holistic view of applicants, considering:
  • Course rigor
  • GPA
  • Well-written college essays
  • Extracurricular activities and leadership
  • Personal circumstances and growth
AP courses play a key role in this holistic review. A strong performance in AP classes shows colleges that a student is prepared for the expectations of higher education and willing to push themselves academically.

AP vs. Running Start: Both Valuable, Not One “Better”
Running Start is a valuable program that allows students to experience college coursework while still in high school, and for some students it is an excellent fit. However, it is important to understand that Running Start is not inherently superior to AP courses.
Highly selective colleges and universities often prefer AP coursework over community college classes because AP courses are standardized, nationally benchmarked, and taught within a high school context that colleges understand well. AP classes also allow students to remain connected to their high school community while pursuing rigorous academics.
The best choice depends on the individual student—but AP courses should be strongly considered as an equally respected, and often preferred, option.

Kamiak’s Longstanding Reputation for Excellence
Kamiak High School has earned a long-standing reputation for offering highly rigorous Advanced Placement courses. This reputation is well known and respected by colleges and universities. Students who take AP classes at Kamiak benefit not only from challenging coursework, but also from a school culture that values academic excellence, integrity, and preparation for future success.

Preparing Students for What Comes Next
Beyond college admissions, AP courses help students develop skills that matter for life after high school: time management, independent learning, critical reading, and effective writing. These skills give students confidence as they transition into college-level expectations.

Final Thoughts
Advanced Placement courses at Kamiak High School offer students a powerful opportunity to challenge themselves, demonstrate academic rigor, and prepare for college success. While there are multiple pathways to higher education, AP classes remain one of the most respected and effective options available. For students who are ready to engage deeply in their learning, Kamiak’s AP program is a choice that deserves serious consideration.

Educational Effectiveness Survey ✔️

Within a school there are certain practices and characteristics that affect student learning and the overall performance of the school. To change or improve, it is first necessary to understand what is happening in your child’s school and what students as well as parents/families are experiencing. Your feedback is important to provide the best possible education for your child.

Taking a few minutes to complete the survey will help us continue to improve the experience for our students and families.

Inclement Weather Plans ❄️🌧️

SCHOOL CLOSURES AND DELAYS
With the sudden drop in temperatures, we thought it would be helpful to give a refresher on what to do in the event school is delayed or canceled due to inclement weather conditions or other events. Bus routes may also be affected by unsafe travel conditions.

The announcement of a school closure or delay is usually made early in the morning. All authorized parents and guardians will receive a ParentSquare message if school is closed or delayed. If you have a mobile phone number on file with your child's school, you should also receive a text message.

Updated school closure and delay information will also be posted on the school district’s website, on the FlashAlert website, and the district Facebook page and Instagram page. If school is canceled, the school day will be made up later in the year. If bus routes are limited due to snow or ice on roadways, the alternate routes are listed on the district transportation website. 🚌🚌🚌🚌

In addition to the mass communication system, there are other options for receiving a text message in the event of a school closure or delay. When the school district announces a change in the schedule, it notifies the local TV and radio stations through a service called FlashAlert. You can receive a text message directly from FlashAlert whenever the school district posts a notice to that system. You can receive that service by signing up for FlashAlert Messenger. Many local TV and radio stations also offer similar services. Most of the major radio and television stations broadcast information about school closures.

EARLY DISMISSAL
Conditions could develop during the school day that may require school to be dismissed earlier than planned. Information about early dismissals will be provided to local radio and television stations and distributed through the school district’s mass communication system. If school is dismissed early, and transportation home is not available, a child will be released only to his or her parent or guardian or to a person previously authorized by the parent or guardian. We ask that parents please bring photo identification (such as a driver’s license) to ensure student safety. School staff will remain at the school until all students have been released.

Check this page on our website to learn more about Emergency Information.

Learn about the Feb. 10 school ballot

Join us for an interactive session with district leaders to learn about the Feb. 10 school ballot! Approval of the renewal learning levy would sustain 300 staff members and programs like athletics, arts, and campus safety, while passage of the capital construction bond would fund dozens of projects to improve student safety, replace outdated building systems, and modernize decades-old schools. Bring your questions and hear directly from the leaders guiding this work. Learn more at: www.mukilteoschools.org/bondlevy2026

COUNSELING CORNER

Semester Grades

As we enter the final three weeks of the semester, we encourage families to review grades together and discuss strategies to address areas of concern. This is a crucial time for students to engage and focus on doing what they can to pass classes and finish the semester strong. If there are classes they can’t pass, we recommend they work with their teacher or counselor to raise their grade as close to passing as possible (every point counts!). This can make it easier to makeup/recover the credit if needed.

For students who need assistance, our academic resources are readily available, including tutoring and teacher/counselor support (see below). We are here to partner with you to help your student end the semester on a positive note!

Teacher Office Hours – Teachers may offer time before or after school for students who need more individualized support. This can be a great time to work on assignments, get feedback, and ask questions along the way. Students should talk with their specific subject teacher to ask about availability. Students may also be able to utilize our upcoming Intervention Time for academic support and should talk with their teacher to see if this is an option.

Academic Coaches – A tutoring program where students can meet with an upper-level student tutor to get help with specific subjects each week in the library. Scheduling is flexible to fit your student’s schedule. Students tutor can be a great resource because they have experienced our classes and curriculum recently and have a good grasp of the material your student is learning. If your student is interested, they can talk with their teacher, counselor, or our librarian, Mrs. Schwenn.

KAP (Kamiak Afterschool Program) – An academic intervention program where students receive assistance with completing current or missing assignments, test-taking, and study skills. KAP is available from 2:10pm-3:00pm Monday-Thursday in Mr. Shaw’s classroom, Portable 1. Students can be referred to KAP by their teacher, administrator, or counselor. Teachers can recommend work for students to complete if they need help with organization or prioritizing.

Study Zone – Opportunity for quiet, individual or group study time in the library from 2:00pm-3:30pm Monday-Thursday each week. Academic Coaches will be available to help students with homework. For questions, students can talk with our librarian, Mrs. Schwenn.

Graduation Requirements for Seniors

With only three weeks left in the semester, we hope you and your student are reviewing grades and making a plan to address classes of concern. Many of our seniors needs to pass all of their classes to graduate. For academic resources, please review the Semester Grades section above. For questions, please don’t hesitate to contact your student’s teacher or counselor.

If your student is completing online classes for credits this year, we hope they have gotten started and are working diligently. Many of these courses can take several months to complete and every year we have students who push the work to the last minute and do not finish in time. Your student will not be eligible to participate in graduation if they have not completed all required credits.

For students enrolled in our Plato Credit Recovery class, keep up the hard work! Many students have quite a few credits to make up and setting up a time to check-in with their Plato teacher can be a great opportunity to confirm their status and make a plan.

Students enrolled in Washington State History, can contact their teacher, Mr. Semeraro, if they have concerns about deadlines for course. We have several seniors who are not passing the class currently, but we hope that they can work hard to catch up and pass for the semester. This is a graduation-required class for those that still need the credit.

World Language Proficiency Exam - Earn credit for fluency!

If you are fluent reading, writing, and speaking another language you could earn up to 4.0 high school credits by taking the World Language Proficiency Exam. If you are interested, please have your student see Ms. Spies in the Counseling office during lunch drop-ins. The deadline to register is Friday, January 16th

The Mukilteo School District provides students in grades 8-12 with an opportunity to earn up to 4.0 high school credits by taking a World Language proficiency exam (WLPE). Students are tested on their reading, writing, and speaking skills in the language selected and must be able to do all three to earn credit. Students earn a “pass” grade and not a letter grade for any credits awarded and therefore does not affect their grade point average. These credits do not count towards the 2.0 external credits (see curriculum guide) that students are allowed to apply to their transcript, and they do count toward the World Language graduation requirement.

For a list of the languages currently being offered to test in, Visit Here.
