KAMIAK WEEKLY UPDATE

January 23, 2026

FROM THE PRINCIPAL

In last week’s message, I shared that we are adjusting how we help students keep cell phones from distracting from learning. I also asked if you would please take a few minutes to watch this video (Click Here) to understand why we think this adjustment is so important.

Here is some information on our adjusted plan:
  • Students can still access their personal electronic devices before school, during passing times, at lunch, and after school. (No change)

  • During class, teachers confiscate personal electronic devices that distract from learning until the end of the period. If this continues happening, teachers confiscate devices and have students pick them up at the office at the end of the school day. (No change)

  • (Change) When students enter classrooms, they stow their electronic devices in a ‘caddy.’ At the end of class, students take back their electronic devices and go on with their day. About half our teachers use this kind of plan in classes now, so the “change” is that we are broadening this to all classes. Teachers will still grant permissions to use phones for legitimate academic purposes, health/safety needs, and when individual circumstances arise.

This week, we met with students about this plan and collected their feedback. Their concerns and ideas were very similar to staff comments collected in December. We are working to include that feedback in our plan as we roll it out to students at the start of second semester.
I support our teachers’ goal of helping students master skills that reduce distractions. I believe those skills are valuable today and for a lifetime.

COUNSELING CORNER

Running Start Webinar

Students have started to come by to ask about applying for Running Start for the 2026-2027 school year. Our counseling team will be sharing information about Running Start with students during our high school registration presentations in mid-February.

Our Career and College Counselor, Mr. Bryan Stelling, will also host an online Running Start webinar on Wednesday, February 11th at 6:30pm. The link for this webinar will be posted on our Career and College Readiness Events page on the Kamiak website. Students will be expected to attend the webinar or watch the recording before meeting with their counselor to establish a plan. If you have questions about the webinar or need help finding the link, please reach out to Mr. Stelling.

Semester Grades

As we enter the final week of the semester, we encourage families to review grades together and discuss strategies to address areas of concern. This is a crucial time for students to engage and focus on doing what they can to pass classes and finish the semester strong. If there are classes they can’t pass, we recommend they work with their teacher or counselor to raise their grade as close to passing as possible (every point counts!). This can make it easier to makeup/recover the credit if needed.

For students who need assistance, our academic resources are readily available, including tutoring and teacher/counselor support (see below). We are here to partner with you to help your student end the semester on a positive note!

Teacher Office Hours – Teachers may offer time before or after school for students who need more individualized support. This can be a great time to work on assignments, get feedback, and ask questions along the way. Students should talk with their specific subject teacher to ask about availability. Students may also be able to utilize our upcoming Intervention Time for academic support and should talk with their teacher to see if this is an option.

Academic Coaches – A tutoring program where students can meet with an upper-level student tutor to get help with specific subjects each week in the library. Scheduling is flexible to fit your student’s schedule. Students tutor can be a great resource because they have experienced our classes and curriculum recently and have a good grasp of the material your student is learning. If your student is interested, they can talk with their teacher, counselor, or our librarian, Mrs. Schwenn.

KAP (Kamiak Afterschool Program) – An academic intervention program where students receive assistance with completing current or missing assignments, test-taking, and study skills. KAP is available from 2:10pm-3:00pm Monday-Thursday in Mr. Shaw’s classroom, Portable 1. Students can be referred to KAP by their teacher, administrator, or counselor. Teachers can recommend work for students to complete if they need help with organization or prioritizing.

Study Zone – Opportunity for quiet, individual or group study time in the library from 2:00pm-3:30pm Monday-Thursday each week. Academic Coaches will be available to help students with homework. For questions, students can talk with our librarian, Mrs. Schwenn.

Graduation Requirements for Seniors

As we wrap up 1st semester, we hope you and your student are sitting down together to review grades and make plans to address classes of concern. Many of our seniors needs to pass all of their classes to graduate. For academic resources, please review the Semester Grades section above. For questions, please don’t hesitate to contact your student’s teacher or counselor.

If your student is completing online classes for credits this year, we hope they have gotten started and are working diligently. Many of these courses can take several months to complete and every year we have students who push the work to the last minute and do not finish in time. Your student will not be eligible to participate in graduation if they have not completed all required credits.

For students enrolled in our Plato Credit Recovery class, keep up the hard work! Many students have quite a few credits to make up and setting up a time to check-in with their Plato teacher can be a great opportunity to confirm their status and make a plan.

Students enrolled in Washington State History, can contact their teacher, Mr. Semeraro, if they have concerns about deadlines for course. We have several seniors who are not passing the class currently, but we hope that they can work hard to catch up and pass for the semester. This is a graduation-required class for those that still need the credit.
