KAMIAK WEEKLY UPDATE

January 30, 2026

FROM THE PRINCIPAL

Whether in the classroom, at our jobs, or in our individual pursuits, our routines (or habits) play a substantial role in the success we experience.
At we start 2nd Semester on February 2, our classes will use a routine that will be new to some students in some classes. Simply put, students place their cell phones in a ‘caddy’ at the start of class and collect their phones again on the way out the door.

I have previously shared a video that frames our teachers’ reason for implementing this new routine. (See below video we shared with students in a recent KTV segment. Minute 2:45 discusses cell phones if you’d like to skip ahead.) We believe we are teaching students for the life they currently live and the future for which they are preparing. And, like all lessons, there is a time between learning and doing. I met with Student Council this week and asked them to share two simple ideas with their peers: 1) Try the new routine for yourself, and 2) Talk with your teacher if you have concerns.
At home, will you please talk with your children about cell phones are viewed in your workplace. Please share with them the kinds of rules and expectations they might experience as they start their post-high school journey. And, will you please have an honest conversation about how they might know if they have an unhealthy/addiction relationship with their technology.

Your children are amazing – I am always grateful for the opportunity to work with them. I believe that a new routine presents potential to reveal even more success to them, now and into the future.

Why is there a cell phone policy?

The cell phone policy is aimed at supporting the overall health, safety, and well-being of Kamiak students. Kamiak High School is committed to promoting a learning-focused environment, and the policy is designed to minimize distractions and help students remain engaged in learning.

Recent research and classroom observations have highlighted the negative impact of cell phones on student learning and well-being. Studies show cell phones can be a significant distraction, hindering students' ability to concentrate and retain information. Additionally, constant notifications and social media access can contribute to increased anxiety and stress in young people. Limiting cell phone use during the school day can create a more conducive learning environment that promotes:

●      Improved Focus and Academic Achievement: With fewer distractions, students can better engage with lessons and achieve academic success.
●      Enhanced Social Interaction: Encouraging face-to-face interaction can help students develop stronger relationships and a greater sense of community within the school.
●      Better Mental Health: Reducing the pressure to be constantly connected can help alleviate anxiety and promote emotional well-being.

STUDENT AND FAMILY INFORMATION

Congratulations to our January Kamiak Students of the Month!

The following students were selected by Kamiak staff as Students of the Month for January 2026 due to their outstanding academics, school and/or community leadership and activities and/or athletics.
A grid of eight student portraits, each with their name and grade level below.

Blessing Githu - CTE Student of the Week

Blessing Githu
CTE Course: Textiles & Design
Nominating Teacher: Mrs. Bumstead
What do you like about the course?  "I like that you can take a piece of material and turn it into something useful. It’s fun seeing how the project turns out from what it started as."
Plans after high school? I plan to go to college and study Fashion and Design, it’s my passion. I love it.
Interesting Fact: My dad first taught me how to sew a hem stitch when I was in 4th grade and living in Kenya. I didn’t have as many chances to sew things like I do now. I moved here about 8 months ago from Kenya and have several projects in mind I’d like to make. This is one of my sketches for a dress I’m making:

Blessing is a true joy to have in Textiles and Design. She takes pride in everything she does, she challenges herself beyond what I ask of her, she seeks opportunities to help others, she’s kind to her classmates – including students she’s meeting for the first time. Blessing consistently goes above and beyond to keep the classroom tools clean and organized, she always has a smile to share and emulates a contagious positive attitude. She is an asset to our program and I’m confident she will continue to do great things with her unique ideas.
Blessing - Thank you for modeling hard work, discipline and for all you do every day.
-Mrs. Bumstead

COUNSELING CORNER

Running Start Webinar

Students have started to come by to ask about applying for Running Start for the 2026-2027 school year. Our counseling team will be sharing information about Running Start with students during our high school registration presentations in mid-February.

Our Career and College Counselor, Mr. Bryan Stelling, will also host an online Running Start webinar on Wednesday, February 11th at 6:30pm. The link for this webinar will be posted on our Career and College Readiness Events page on the Kamiak website. Students will be expected to attend the webinar or watch the recording before meeting with their counselor to establish a plan. If you have questions about the webinar or need help finding the link, please reach out to Mr. Stelling.

College Applications: Mid-Year Report (Senior Families Only)

If you have a senior applying to 4-year colleges or universities, they may soon receive a reminder about the Mid-Year Report/Mid-Year Transcript application requirement. This report, which includes a copy of their 1st semester grades, allows admissions offices to review how a student is performing academically during their senior year. It can help confirm that students are maintaining strong grades, continuing to challenge themselves, and/or making progress in current courses. It can also influence admission decisions, waitlist outcomes, and scholarship consideration, depending on the school.

Not all schools will ask for a Mid-Year Report. Please have your student check each college’s application portal to confirm whether one is required. If so, they will need to contact their school counselor to review next steps. Transcripts will be updated and available when we return from mid-winter break.
An important note…colleges request Mid-Year Reports early in the year because some high schools end their semesters in January. These institutions recognize that high schools across states will finalize first-semester transcripts at different times. Please know that any deadline prior to early-March, is not a hard deadline, and schools will accept transcripts at the time they are available from the individual high school. If students are concerned about deadlines from the college, they can reach out to the college’s admissions office directly.
