The fall sports season is drawing to a close and the winter sports season is starting up soon. Thank you and congratulations to all our fall sports athletes – boys and girls Cross Country, football, volleyball, boys tennis, girls soccer and girls swim, and Unified bowling. On behalf of our players and fans, thank you also to our coaches, boosters, and volunteers. I can’t make it to all our sporting events; but, I am always a Kamiak fan for every event I attend. You make me (and the Kamiak community) so proud!

1st Nochecita flyer
First Nochecita - Family Night for Spanish-speaking Families
Kamiak High School is excited to host its first Nochecita, a family night for Spanish-speaking families, on Wednesday, November 20th, from 6 PM to 8 PM.

The event is designed to educate families about the various resources available to pay for college. While all families are welcome to attend, it is especially important for high school seniors to participate and learn about financial aid. This information will help them create an account and begin their application process in December. The event will be presented in Spanish. Don't miss out on this valuable opportunity!

Native American Heritage Month
November is Indigenous People's Month, also known as Native American Heritage Month, where we spotlight the rich heritage and culture of Native American, Alaskan Native, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander communities around us.

Kamiak Land Acknowledgement: We acknowledge we are on the ancestral homelands of the Coast Salish Peoples, who have lived in the Salish Sea basin since time immemorial. We respect this place and honor the sacred spiritual connection to the land, water, and its people, past, present, and future. By acknowledging these lands and their original Indigenous inhabitants, we reach back to our own indigenous roots and reflect on the impacts of colonialism and the lands from which all our people come. We are connected to our ancestors through this connection to land, for the land is what connects us all. We express our deepest respect and gratitude to the traditional people of this territory, the Snohomish and Tulalip Tribes, for their enduring care and protection of the land which we currently share.

SENIORS
Don’t Delay! Request College Application Materials Two Weeks Before the Deadline!
It is college application season. You may have a need for supplemental materials from either counselors or teachers so there are a few things you need to consider. Whether you need a school report or a letter of recommendation, please contact your counselor and/or teacher two weeks prior to the deadline to request their assistance. If you invited your counselor and/or teachers into your application, but have not met with them, please come meet with them in-person as soon as possible. Please note, letters and reports take considerable time and are outside the duties of the recommender. Therefore, it is imperative that the person is asked, given ample time, and that you follow up with an appropriate thank you.

It is never too late to show appreciation for someone who has assisted you, so if you have already submitted an application, please consider circling back.

COUNSELING
Personalized Pathway Waiver (SENIORS!)
Does your 12th grade student still have Fine Arts and/or World Language credits needed for graduation? If yes, please read the message below. If your student is unsure, please have them reach out to their counselor to review a copy of their transcript.

Students can waive up to 1.0 Fine Arts credit and up to 2.0 World Language credits for graduation through their Personalized Pathway Requirement (PPR). The Personalized Pathway allows for certain credits in high school to be “flexible” credits to give students more choice in pursuing their interests, based around their post-high school goals.

If your student is planning to waive their remaining Fine Arts and/or World Language credits, they need to meet with their school counselor AS SOON AS POSSIBLE to complete the PPR waiver form. Forms can be found in the Counseling Office if students want to pick up a copy. We have many students who are not on track for graduation as they are still missing these credits.
Transcripts for Post-High School Opportunities
We are in the middle of our post-high school planning season for 12th grade students. Students may be applying to the military, community college, universities, trade schools, apprenticeships, and more this year. Your student may find they need a copy of their official transcript for an application or to be considered for a program. As a reminder, transcripts are a cumulative record of your student’s high school courses, grades, and credits. GPA (Grade Point Average) is provided on the transcript and updated each semester as new classes and grades are added.

To request a copy of an official transcript, students should visit the Transcript Request page of the Kamiak website, located within the Counseling Office section under the Counseling tab. Students will need to create an account (using their own personal email) in the Parchment application to submit the transcript request. This is a free service for current students. Transcripts will be delivered electronically and can be sent to students themselves, family members, school staff, programs, colleges, etc. Students should allow 2-3 school days to process requests. Please encourage your students to work with their counselor or our college and career counselor if they need help with this process.

An unofficial transcript displays an informal view of your students’ classes and grades, credits earned, and an overview of remaining graduation requirements. Students may want a copy in order to review their academic record and/or self-input information into applications. Students should contact their school counselor to obtain a copy of their unofficial transcript, if needed.
College Applications: Common App, Transcripts, and Letters of Recommendation
We know there are many seniors who are completing college applications this fall and winter. If your students is applying to schools through Common App, they will need to invite their school counselor into their applications to complete the School Report (academic records), and possibly some additional sections. Please have your student meet with their counselor at least 2-weeks in advance of their first deadline to confirm we received the invite and check that have everything we need to complete counselor-required tasks. To prepare for this meeting, students should also fill out a Personal Data Form. Hard copies of the form can be found in the Counseling Office. Students can also access a digital version on the Kamiak website (CCRC à Letters of Recommendation).

For transcripts, please see the directions in the section above. After students invite their counselor into Common App, they will need to log into their Parchment account and request for a transcript to be sent to Common App: First Year. Students should also request a copy to be sent to their school counselor via email. If your student is applying to colleges that are not on the Common App, they may need to submit their transcript directly to these schools. As a reminder, counselors do not have access to official transcripts, so all requests need to go through Parchment (see above).

If your student is applying to schools that require teacher or counselor letters of recommendation, we highly encourage them to meet with recommenders as far in advance of their deadlines as possible, during available office hours. The more time given, the better your student’s letter can be. Students will need to first approach their recommenders to ask if they are available to write for them. If they say yes, students should invite them into the Common App and give them a copy of the Personal Data Form mentioned above.
Lastly, counselors and teachers do not work evenings, weekends, or during holiday breaks. It is your student’s responsibility to make sure our staff have everything we need in advance so we can meet deadlines and support them in the process. If your student is unsure if they have taken all necessary steps, they should reach out to their school counselor or our college and career counselor, Bryan Stelling, to confirm everything is on track. We are here to help!
