Kamiak Weekly Update

This weekend, we take a long pause to celebrate Thanksgiving. Know that, when I pause to reflect on all for which I am thankful, I have a long list that includes the Kamiak staff, our students, and this great community. I am grateful to share in our experiences with one another.

 

I have long been an advocate of the importance of breaks. It takes substantial energy and focus to teach and learn in high school. Our breaks are restorative. They interrupt the pace of school and allow for our other priorities to come to the forefront. Young people’s minds are adept at using the boredom of breaks to explore new ideas and interests. Our breaks give us a chance to get healthy – sleep, diet, and exercise are so important.

 

In whatever ways you and your family use this long weekend, may you take a wonderful break and be overcome with the joy of having many reasons to be thankful. 

Hope Holiday is Kamiak’s longest standing tradition. Each year our students and staff help provide gifts for children in our community. Want to help? Here is how:

1. Many of our 3rd period classes already have a wish list of items. These range from clothing, to toys, and household items like blankets or dishes. Check with your Kamiak student to see if their class has a list they are working on.

2. If your student’s class didn’t adopt a family and you still want to help, please check out our Amazon Wishlist and have items shipped directly to Kamiak or contact Crystal Stengele at StengeleCM@mukilteo.wednet.edu.

Last week, overdue notices for textbooks and library materials will be distributed to students during their 3rd-period homeroom. If your student receives a notice, please take a moment to remind them to locate and return any overdue items to the Textbook Room or the library as soon as possible.

If any items are lost or damaged, fines can be paid online through the Online Payments section on Kamiak’s homepage, or directly to the Bookkeeper in the Attendance Office.

November is Indigenous People's Month, also known as Native American Heritage Month, where we spotlight the rich heritage and culture of Native American, Alaskan Native, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander communities around us.

Kamiak Land Acknowledgement: We acknowledge we are on the ancestral homelands of the Coast Salish Peoples, who have lived in the Salish Sea basin since time immemorial. We respect this place and honor the sacred spiritual connection to the land, water, and its people, past, present, and future. By acknowledging these lands and their original Indigenous inhabitants, we reach back to our own indigenous roots and reflect on the impacts of colonialism and the lands from which all our people come. We are connected to our ancestors through this connection to land, for the land is what connects us all. We express our deepest respect and gratitude to the traditional people of this territory, the Snohomish and Tulalip Tribes, for their enduring care and protection of the land which we currently share.

It's the Most Wonderful Time of Year to celebrate our Kamiak Staff! Do you have a favorite recipe for pecan bars, rugelach, sugar cookies, or gingerbread? Is your favorite holiday treat Hershey kisses or homemade fudge? Whether you bake it or buy it, we encourage you to share a couple dozen for our staff!! Please bring assorted treats to the main office by Dec 16th & 17th, and we will have a special place for teachers to box treats of their choosing!
