KAMIAK WEEKLY UPDATE
February 7, 2025
FROM THE PRINCIPAL
Congratulations to our Winter Sports athletes on another fine season of sportsmanship and excellence!

Over the last few months, I have seen our student-athletes’ dedication and hard work pay off in personal and team victories. There is something special about a healthy team dynamic where everyone is there to support the success of everyone else. I enjoy seeing the whole swim team shouting praise for a teammate who hits a personal best. When I see a player return to the bench getting high-fives from coaches and teammates for good play, I know the team is a good place to grow and learn. And, when an exhausted wrestler is rewarded with kind words from proud teammates after a particularly tough bout, I am grateful my students get that opportunity.

At Kamiak, we are part of the WESCO conference. Our mantra is ‘Be Loud, Be Proud, and Be Positive.’ This is far more than a call to be nice to others. It’s our culture as players and fans working with one another to enhance the home court advantage.

For more than a dozen years, student leaders have coordinated with administration, coaches, and players to keep the focus on our teams’ superior play. We recognize great athleticism from other teams…but the only team that gets our attention is the Knights. Referees know that we show sportsmanship in gameplay and from the stands – we want our officials to choose Kamiak events. When we travel to away sites, we have a reputation of drowning out the home crowd with cheers for our teams.

Fan (students and families) behavior keeps referees’ attention on gameplay instead of distracting from the contest. Our students and fans show up expecting to have fun and cheer along. The impact of this has been substantial, especially over the last several years. I am proud of how we are working together to create a great place to be a player, coach, and fan. I am especially proud of our athletes and their coaches on a well-played season. For those headed to the post-season, I look forward to cheering you on all the way to State. And, I am thankful for our fans for their show of support all year – loud, proud, and positive.

Celebrating Student Success: Microsoft Word Certification Achieved!
Congratulations to the students who successfully passed the Microsoft Word Associate Certification Test this semester! This industry-recognized certification is a valuable achievement, and they earned it for free through the Microsoft IT Academy course. We know they are excited to showcase this accomplishment on their resumes, job applications, and college applications. Well done!
Annual WIDA Assessment in English Proficiency Feb 3 -14
Our multilingual students will be completing their annual WIDA assessment in English proficiency. Testing will take place over the next two weeks, Mon Feb 3- Fri, Feb 14. Students will be grouped and tested over 2 days each day covering two domains (Listening/Reading and Speaking/Writing). Many students will be testing in our Multi-Purpose Room in East Campus from start of school at 720a until 1st lunch at 1120a. Teachers and our Attendance team will have a list of which students are testing when, passes will be sent out as well to students with the dates they are expected to test. Some ML students in ML classes may be testing in their classroom with their ML teacher.
We ask the students to bring their laptop and charger with them as the test is conducted online.

If there are any questions, please reach out to Lexy Roundtree (roundtreeal@mukilteo.wednet.edu).
World Language Proficiency Exam- Earn Credit for Fluency!
If you are fluent in reading, writing, and speaking another language you could earn up to 4 high school credits by taking the World Language Proficiency Exam. If you are interested, please email Ms. Spies for details, or stop by during lunch drop-ins. The deadline to register is Friday, February 28th.

The Mukilteo School District provides students in grades 8-12 with an opportunity to earn up to 4.0 high school credits by taking a World Language proficiency exam (WLPE) that is offered for nearly 100 languages. Students are tested on their reading, writing, and speaking skills in the language selected and must be able to demonstrate ability in all three areas. Students earn a “pass” grade and not a letter grade for any credits awarded and therefore does not affect their grade point average. These credits do not count towards the 2.0 external credits (see curriculum guide) that students are allowed to apply to their transcript, and they do count toward the World Language graduation requirement.

Kamiak Athletic Hall of Fame
Greetings Kamiak Knights Community! Beginning on 2/1/25, the Kamiak Athletic Hall of Fame Committee will be opening our Hall of Fame nomination process to our whole school community and alumni networks for our next HOF induction class of 2025-2026. The nomination window will stay open until 6/1/25. Once the nomination window closes, then our committee will review all nominations in August of 2025, and then determine which nominees will be inducted into the 2nd inductee class of the Kamiak Hall of Fame using our established Kamiak HOF criteria. Once the inductees have been selected, then we will honor and recognize our HOF inductees at half time of our Homecoming football game in the Fall of 2025, and then host an induction ceremony at Kamiak in June of 2026.

Here is our nomination form for our 2nd Kamiak HOF induction class for the 2025-2026 school year (due 6/1/25):

We will be hosting our first every Kamiak HOF induction ceremony on June 21st, 2025 in our Commons from 1-4pm. We are excited about honoring and recognizing the outstanding student-athletes, teams, and coaches from Kamiak. Planning and preparation for our 1st ever Kamiak HOF ceremony are still being developed. More details to come!

  • If you’d like to help us by volunteering to be on our HOF induction ceremony sub-committee, then please don’t hesitate to contact Sean Monica the building athletic director for more information.
  • Email at: monicasp@mukilteo.wednet.edu

Here again is our 1st Kamiak HOF induction class that we will celebrate this June:

We are so appreciative of the on-going support of our Kamiak community & alumni. And we’re excited about the partnerships our coaches, our student-athletes, and our parents engage in each and every day. As a result of these combined efforts, I have no doubt that there are future Kamiak Hall of Famer’s walking our halls.

COUNSELING CORNER
Running Start Spring Quarter Registration
Spring quarter registration will begin near the end of February. To register for classes, students will need to complete the quarterly Running Start Verification form and meet with their Kamiak school counselor to have it signed. A copy of the verification form is available on the Kamiak Running Start page (under Counseling) and hard copies are available in the Counseling Office. Students were all sent directions for spring quarter registration to their school outlook email. They should refer to this before contacting their counselor.

On an ongoing basis, the college sends email reminders for registration, requirements, etc. We ask that students please review all college email communication they receive. Students are also required to continually check their school email (outlook) throughout the school year. Our team sends reminders not only about Running Start, but also updated Kamiak schedules, graduation reminders, grade-level activities, etc. Students are responsible for knowing this information.
Graduation Requirements for Seniors
If your student is completing online classes for credits this year, we highly recommend they get started on these as soon as possible. Many of these courses can take several months to complete and every year we have students who push the work to the last minute. Your student will not be eligible to participate in graduation if they have not completed all required credits.

For students enrolled in our Plato Credit Recovery class, keep up the hard work! Many students have quite a few credits to make up and setting up a time to check-in with their Plato teacher can be a great opportunity to confirm their status and make a plan.

Students enrolled in Washington State History, can contact their teacher, Mr. Semeraro, if they have concerns about deadlines for course. We have quite a few seniors who are not passing the class at this time, and we hope that students can work hard to catch up and pass for the semester. This is a graduation-required class for those that still need the credit.
Running Start 2025-2026
Students have started to come by to ask about applying for Running Start for the 2025-2026 school year. Our counseling team will be sharing information about Running Start with students during our high school registration presentations in mid-February.

Our Career and College Counselor, Mr. Bryan Stelling, will host an online Running Start webinar on Tuesday, February 11th at 6:30pm. The link for this webinar will be posted on the main Career and College Readiness page of the Kamiak website. Students will be expected to attend the webinar or watch the recording before meeting with their counselor to establish a plan. Students can come in during lunch drop-ins for questions about Running Start after mid-winter break.

If you have questions about the webinar or need help finding the link, please reach out to Mr. Stelling.
Personalized Pathway Waiver (SENIORS!)
We still have MANY students that did not meet the deadline to submit their Personalized Pathway form (explanation below). Students who still require Fine Arts and/or World language credits, but do not plan to take courses, are not on track for graduation at this time. Please talk with your student and review their academic record to ensure they complete remaining requirements for graduation.

Does your 12th grade student still have Fine Arts and/or World Language credits needed for graduation? If yes, please read the message below. If your student is unsure, please have them reach out to their counselor to review a copy of their transcript.

Students can waive up to 1.0 Fine Arts credit and up to 2.0 World Language credits for graduation through their Personalized Pathway Requirement (PPR). The Personalized Pathway allows for certain credits in high school to be “flexible” credits to give students choice in pursuing their interests and goals.

Forms can be found in the Counseling Office.
