KAMIAK WEEKLY UPDATE

May 2, 2025

FROM THE PRINCIPAL

Next week, May 5–9, we celebrate Teacher Appreciation Week, a time to honor the incredible educators who make Kamiak High School a place of learning, growth, and inspiration.

Our teachers go above and beyond every day to support students academically, emotionally, and personally. They are mentors, motivators, and role models who pour their energy, care, and talent into helping every student succeed.

I encourage you to join us in recognizing the amazing work they do. A kind note, a simple thank-you, or a thoughtful gesture can go a long way in reminding our teachers how valued they are.

To our Kamiak teachers: You are the heart of this school, and your impact goes far beyond the classroom. Thank you for your dedication, passion, and unwavering commitment to our students and school community.

Saturday, April 26
The Varsity Girls Softball team earned a thrilling 2-1 victory over Glacier Peak, while the JV team came up short.

Monday, April 28
Girls Tennis has shown solid play this season. In both matches versus Lake Stevens, Anna and Julia dominated in singles to lead the team to double victories. Megan and Charissa as well as Fatiha and Mina all stomped their Cascade doubles opponents in straight sets. And yes.... Suah and Annemarie are still undefeated for the season. And Audrey has been shaking up the singles as she bageled her last opponent 6-0, 6-0. Keep up the amazing work players, and good luck against Glacier Peak! Senior Night is May 5th. Come out to the Kamiak courts and watch Kamiak take on Jackson!

C-team Boys Soccer lost to Mariner

Varsity Boys Baseball and JV Baseball lost to Meadowdale

JV Girls Softball won 18-6 against Mariner and Varsity lost against Snohomish

Tuesday, April 29
Kamiak Girls Golf crushed it at the Kitsap Invitational — 1st in our division and tied for 4th overall! Big shoutout to Allie Pr for shooting an impressive 77!

JV and Varsity Boys Soccer teams both earned wins over Lake Stevens — JV with a 1-0 victory and Varsity with a 2-1 win.

Wednesday, April 30
JV Girls Tennis lost to Glacier Peak

Varsity Girls Softball won 7-0 against Archbishop Murphy

JV Girls Softball lost to Inglemoor

Boys Soccer - Last night your Knights boys soccer C-team played Everett High School and tied 1-1 on a late game tying goal by Connor Florendo following a shot from Cooper Knutzen. On Tuesday night your Knights JV and Varsity traveled to Lake Stevens to take them on, on their senior night. JV went up 1-0 early on a cross by Dario Baez that was finished by Ashton Bullock. That was all it took for your Knights to walk away with the win 1-0 keeping lake out of the goal and not allowing them to create much in the attack. The Varsity Boys battled hard and went into half time up 2-0 on a beautiful free kick goal by Yegor Tarasov from a foul earned by Max George. The second goal was a corner by Yoel Segura that was headed in by Max George. The Vikings would get an early second half goal on a controversial no call. Instead of allowing that to energize Lake, your knights controlled the game forcing the Vikings keeper to make a couple great saves to keep it at 2-1.

PERFORMING ARTS

Something Rotten! - This Weekend

Welcome to the Renaissance and the outrageous, crowd-pleasing musical farce, Something Rotten. Set in the 1590s, brothers Nick and Nigel Bottom are desperate to write a hit play but are stuck in the shadow of that Renaissance rock star known as "The Bard." When a local soothsayer foretells that the future of theatre involves singing, dancing and acting at the same time, Nick and Nigel set out to write the world’s very first musical. But amidst the scandalous excitement of opening night, the Bottom Brothers realize that reaching the top means being true to thine own self, and all that jazz.

Something Rotten features large song and dance numbers, and a wacky cast of over-the-top characters, each with their own moment to shine. Throughout its Broadway run, the musical received a show-stopping standing ovation from audiences... in the beginning of the first act! It’s become clear that “nothing’s as amazing as a musical,” so don’t miss your chance to see this history-twisting tale.

Kamiak Choirs Achieve Top Honors at Washington State Ensemble Contest

The Kamiak High School Choir Program is thrilled to announce an outstanding achievement at the 2025 Washington State Solo and Ensemble Contest, held April 25–26 in Ellensburg, Washington. Kamiak’s Large Men’s Ensemble, Just Be Natural, and Large Mixed Ensemble, The Midknights, each earned 2nd place in the State in their respective categories — a tremendous accomplishment that reflects the students’ extraordinary dedication and artistry.

The Washington State Solo and Ensemble Contest is highly competitive, drawing top musical talent from across the state. Kamiak’s ensembles rose to the challenge, delivering powerful and moving performances that showcased both technical excellence and deep musical expression.

“We are incredibly proud of our students,” said Kamiak Choir Director Nancy Duck Jefferson “Their commitment to their craft and their collective passion for music were evident in every note. To place second in the entire state is a true testament to their hard work, teamwork, and artistic spirit.”

The Kamiak Choir Program continues to build a tradition of excellence, inspiring students to reach new heights through music.

Congratulations to Just Be Natural, The Midknights, and the entire Kamiak Choir community for this remarkable achievement!

COUNSELING CORNER

Graduation

We are officially less than two months away from graduation!! This is an exciting time, but it is also extremely important for students to focus, be proactive in problem-solving, and work with their team if they need support. It is not uncommon for seniors to lose motivation this time of year, knowing graduation is just around the corner. If your student cannot complete all requirements, they may not be eligible to graduate and/or participate in the ceremony.

Please encourage your student to confirm they are on-track for graduation and have them reach out to their teachers or counselor to make a plan, if needed. If your student is currently not passing classes, attending credit recovery, working on independent study or online classes, or needs to submit additional paperwork to be on-track, they should be keeping in contact with their teachers and counselor consistently over the coming weeks. We are here to help and hope to support every student in finishing the year strong!!

SBA Testing for Running Start Students

As a reminder, all current 11th grade students are required to take the Washington Comprehensive Assessment for Science (WCAS) during state testing at the end of May. Those who have not passed the Smarter Balanced state assessments for English and Math are also required to retake the test(s) they did not pass. Passing SBA state tests can open doors to high school credit, and our counselors HIGHLY encourage students to make sure they attend and put their best effort towards passing. Students will need to notify their college teachers if they need to be excused from a class for testing. Please look for communications regarding test dates and locations coming soon from our administrator, Ms. Sasha Fraleigh.

Kamiak Registration – Schedule Change Opportunity

Between Monday, April 28th and Friday, May 9th, all current 8th-11th grade students will have the opportunity to change their Kamiak course requests for next year. Friday, May 9th will be the LAST DAY that students can change their course choices. After this date, all classes are locked in for the full 2025-2026 school year.

Current Kamiak students will need to make an appointment with their school counselor or drop by the Counseling Office during their lunch time to request changes. All changes will need to come directly from the student (not the parent/guardian) in order to be processed. We cannot accept message or email requests for changes.

Current 8th grade students will need to send a Schoology message or email to their next year Kamiak counselor to request course changes. All changes will need to come directly from the student (not the parent/guardian) in order to be processed. A notification will be sent to the middle schools to let students know the change window is open.

We try to give every student their first choice of classes. But, due to the complexities of scheduling, students are sometimes assigned into their alternates or the closest similar class. Due to availability, some class requests have been altered or specific courses may be unavailable to change into. We encourage students and families to double check their course requests and alternates during this last opportunity to make changes to ensure they feel confident and happy with their decisions.

Running Start Fall Quarter Registration

Fall quarter registration has begun, and college fall course guides are now available!! If your student is planning to attend fall quarter at Running Start, please read through the information below that pertains to your individual student.

For currently enrolled Running Start students (11th grade) to register for classes, they will need to complete the quarterly verification form and meet with their Kamiak school counselor to have it signed. Students should review class options in the college course guide before contacting their counselor. The earlier this step can be completed, the better chance they have of getting the classes they want/need. A copy of the verification form is available on the Kamiak Running Start page (under Counseling) and hard copies are available in the Counseling Office.

Students enrolling for the first time should be in the process of completing the Running Start registration steps on the college website. All students need to have viewed our Kamiak Running Start Webinar prior to registration. The webinar link is available on the Career and College Readiness page of the Kamiak website (under Counseling). We HIGHLY recommend parents watch this webinar with their students. As students navigate steps, they can contact their school counselor for questions.

Is your student interested in summer quarter at Running Start? Your student may be eligible for summer college classes and should talk to their Kamiak counselor if they want to explore this option. This quarter is open to incoming new students, current students, and even graduating seniors who qualify. Summer quarter is shorter (less than 8 weeks long), faster paced than a typical quarter, and the amount of credits taken can impact or be impacted by the number of credits your student completes during the regular school year. If your student is interested in summer quarter, they should contact their counselor while completing fall quarter registration.
